I am a mother of two children and I was told I have telegen effluvium after a bad salon highlight back on March 29, 2009. I had an allergic reaction after years of highlighting my hair. I am also having other issues since this highlight. However, I cry when I see my hair fall out and when I take a shower cleaning up the hair near the drain is very difficult. I told my husband it is better for him not to be home when I take a shower because that is my melt down time. I cry and pray and hope this will get better soon but the shedding of my hair is so bad. I am 38 and use to be attractive and as I sit here and type this my eyes are are swelling with tears. Along with this hair reaction I have my skin that feels on fire. So I do not work out anymore and my husband does not know how to handle this with me. What can I say he is a guy but he also use to make comments on how nice my hair would look. My last compliment regarding my hair was back in March before I had the allergic reaction. I pull it back but it is getting harder to hide the thinning hair and I too am ready to shave my head and get a wig. I have to look at myself and everyday I say it is just hair you have other issues and hair is hair but being a female who use to have pretty hair it is hard. Anyone in Raleigh NC going through the same ordeal?

Hello and welcome, Bonnie!
I know how hard alopecia can be; I have had it for about 30 years (I wear wigs). After I became the spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, a lot of women were needing my help and support, so I wrote a book called, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" You can find out more on my page -- and it's available on this site under "Bookshelf." Let me know if there's anything else I can do!
