About Me:
I was diagnosed with relaxer related alopecia 20+ years ago. After my initial diagnosis, I immediately went into denial, covering my condition with hair weaves. Although, I maintained good hair care practices, I never asked my beautician about or looked at my hair or scalp during my regular salon visits. Several months ago, I decided I no longer wanted to wear hair weaves, I was ready to finally face what I had been running from for years. I was excited about removing the hair weave and sporting a new short tapered cut….but to my surprise…all the hair in my crown was gone and my scalp was smooth with no visible hair follicles present. What had started out as a nickel sized bald spot had grown into the size of a one dollar bill. I was devastated. My denial process started all over. I knew that I didn’t want to wear hair weaves anymore so I purchased several wigs believing that I could still get the short, tapered cut I was looking for, but to my surprise I couldn’t find the right look for me. After several trips to the beauty supply store and countless dollars spent, I decided to visit a dermatologist yet again with the hope that medicine had surely advanced since my original diagnosis 20+ years ago. Yes, medicine had advanced, they now had a name for my condition “Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA)” or as it’s better known...scarring alopecia...a condition which results in the complete loss of the hair follicle. The dermatologist was very apologetic as she delivered the devastating news. I left the doctor’s office that day thinking that she had to be wrong. Again, looking for a way to prove my condition and the dermatologist wrong, I spent more money on numerous natural herbs and consultations with no guaranteed results. It was then, that I finally made the decision to come to terms with my diagnoses and decided to take the “BIG CHOP” plunge. And so my NEW JOURNEY began…I am embracing my alopecia (baldness). MY PURPOSE has been reveled…I am OWING IT with complete CONFIDENCE (but still humble) and look forward to sharing my story with others, spreading awareness, and most of all being an inspiration for those who are BeYoutifully Unique.
