Hi Kelly Our daughter Nicole developed Alopecia when she was 8. This was the start of a long journey for our whole family. We did try some treatments (creams mostly) and they were ghastly. Through this whole process we have had the most amazing support from people who know what it's like to live with Alopecia on a daily basis or who have a child who has Alopecia, they have in turn helped us to help Nicole become the beautiful confident young lady she is now (16). I know in our situation Nicole coped with this a whole heap better than I did. I was so busy trying to make everything ok for her! It was about four years before she/we had to take the bull by the horns and shaved the last bit of her hair off and ordered her a freedom hairpiece..........needless to say she hasn't looked back since! You have a great source of support in the people you will meet and although Alopecia is something you would rather live without you do make the most amazing friends along the way. Take care ..... Sharon xo

I remember those days well (I was 4 or 5 when my hair went). Glad to her she is strong.

I think you should still see your GP to see what he says (Probably not much), you should also talk to them about your own health\stress too as parents need all the help they can get and with the earthquakes and all being a parent can be hard work.

If you have any questions etc etc I'm more than happy to talk to you, I've lived a life of AU and i am trying to get more people in NZ connected to support each other.

Hi Kelly,

Very sorry to hear about your daughter's condition.

As a forty something male when I got alopecia, I had always half expected that my hair might recede (but not fall out in clumps)so the emotional aspect has never been a big issue for me. I was living in the UK at the time and was referred to a hospital who put me on a course of medication for 6 weeks (oral corticosteroids I think).

These had no effect on the alopecia and I didn't enjoy being on the drug at the time. So in retrospect I wish I had said no when they suggested them and would agree with Paul's comment below about failed "cures".

All the best

Graeme

Hi Kelly,

There is currently no known cure for Alopecia so I would not place much trust in SRS clinics, clive clinics etc and if they tell you that they can cure Alopecia then they are lying. There is no evidence on their websites as to actual results etc etc so I would be very very wary.

More often that not the dissapointment of a failed "cure" can have a very negative impact on ones emotional state of mind.

Some of us meet in chch occasionally for a coffee, your more than welcome to come along next time.

Cheers

paul
