I was about 25 when I got my first patch. There are things you can do like steriods -- I talk about many treatments in my book. I have not tried anything personally for years. Until they find something that really works, it's just not worth the time, money and frustration for me. But when you are new to it, it's natural to try things. Alopecia is unpredictable, and you may find that the hair grows back on its own. As for me, I am fine with having no hair...I especially like not having to shave my legs!

You are right, there are no viable treatment options at this time. Within the last couple of years, they have isolated eight genes that are responsible for alopecia areata, and they believe this is the start of something major that will actually work.

I know, it's difficult! When I did research for my book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" I discovered that all of the women I interviewed went through the same anger and disbelief as you are going through now. Some of the treatments they tried were very interesting!
But I am happy to tell you that scientists have made a lot of progress and I'm confident that an effective treatment will be discovered soon, within the next few years. Hang in there!
