I am a wife and a mother of three boys. My hair started thining out when I was 13. It was very difficult for me during my teen age years. I would love to hear other peoples experiences.
I am sorry that you had to deal with all that on your own. You are not alone now! I hope that you get to meet more people on this site that have had similar situations to yourself.
I can understand that you feel depressed. My son Jon has been suffering from depression for the last 6 months or more because he lost all of his hair. He is starting to pull himself out of it. Very very slowly.
Get all the support you can. It does make a difference. Maybe you could join some of the groups that are on this site. There is a whole host of them. You will find discussions and blogs that you can reply to or you can start your own. I have found this all helpful. People on this site are very supportive.
Have a good look around the site and tell me what you think.
Take care
It would have been very hard for you. Did you wear a wig? I know that wigs today are alot better than they used to be so I guess wearing one then would have made anyone very self conscious.
How about you? Did your family give you support when you were a teen? And now - is your husband supportive? I know when it comes to our children they love us for who we are don't they?
Hi Danilee
Welcome to AW
My 13 year old son has Alopecia Totalis, going on to Universalis. He has had Alopecia since he was 6. I think he is finding it the hardest to deal with now. More than when he was younger.
Teenagers are very aware of their appearance aren't they. I remember being very self conscious about pimples at the time. Having alopecia is worse as in most cases you don't know of anyone else that has it.
He has spent a few months hiding away since he lost all of his hair. He is just 'coming out' now. He has been gradually 'coming out' bit by bit. Not wearing a hat for short periods of time. Though he went to the public pool today and spent 3 hours in crowded conditions without a hat. That is the biggest step to date and we are so proud of him.
I know he had moments where he felt uncomfortable but he stuck it out.
