Hi all,

I am between jobs at the moment and this is the first job search I'll be doing as a bald woman. To other bald ladies out there, have you experienced discrimination when being interviewed because of your appearance related to gender, meaning that if you'd have been a bald man in the same situation you might have been treated differently? I am worried I won't get hired because of the way I look.

Hi all,

I am between jobs at the moment and this is the first job search I'll be doing as a bald woman.
Many times going out in public, I choose not to cover my head. When I do cover it, it is because of weather, feeling like accessorizing with a pretty scarf or hat, or sometimes just having a tough day (it's still really new for me and it gets emotional). I have never worn wigs because they seem expensive and possibly uncomfortable (although if I had lots of money and found that I liked wearing them I'd have a fun assortment to have different hair every day). I don't want to decrease my chances of hire but I don't want to spend upwards of $200 on something that hides who I am. (note: to me this is NOT the same as buying professional clothing because anyone has to do that, not just someone that has alopecia and XX-chromosomes).

So my main question is this: if I am dressed just a professionally as the bald dude sitting next to me, applying for the same job, is it probably safe or unsafe for me to go into the interview without a head covering of any kind? If not, can I get away with a scarf or do I have to bite the bullet and buy a stupid wig? (Not that wigs are stupid, I'm just not sure they're for me).
The joys and anxieties of regrowthtag:alopeciaworld.com,2013-05-21:2022678:Topic:10457182013-05-21T10:34:38.380Zlosing_ithttps://alopeciaworld.com/profile/booboo

Just wondering, when is the right time to take your wig off? My hair regrew when I was about 25 but then all dropped out about 2 years later. This was actually just in time to coincide with me starting teacher training which seems like it would be terrible but actually worked out because I started wearing a wig again before the school placements and there was no major change for any students to see. It was however deeply disappointing and heart breaking to go through losing my hair again…

Anyway that was about 6 years ago and now it has almost completely grown back again. So when is it safe to take the wig off? It’s actually almost easier living without hair because you always know where you stand, you have alopecia, you deal with it and you live with it (I’ve had it since I was 9). But when it grows back and all your friends and family are doing the happy dance, you have to spend your whole time wondering when/if it’s all going to fall out again. And as a teacher, going through that in front of teenage students in a high school is a somewhat daunting prospect.

I have been tempted to shave it all off and continue wearing a wig because then I know that I’m in control, not this pain in the backside “condition”. But what a waste, maybe this is it, maybe it won’t fall out this time? And also I am starting in a new school in a new city next September – perfect chance for a new start, wigless. Or maybe I’m just setting myself up for a fall? The thoughts, anecdotes and opinions from fellow forum members would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Marie
Can't find a job - is it the baldness?tag:alopeciaworld.com,2011-07-21:2022678:Topic:7285072011-07-21T01:20:48.324ZLaurelinterpretshttps://alopeciaworld.com/profile/Laurelinterprets
My son has Alopecia Universalis. He has just graduated high school and is looking for his first job. His hair started falling out when he was about 7. He has never worn a wig and only wore a cap for maybe a year or so. After that, he has just gone bald everywhere he goes. He seems to be proud of who he is and has lots of friends. He is very outgoing and funny and everybody loves him.
He is, however, having a hard time finding a job. He is starting to think that maybe it is due to the fact that the baldness makes him look so different. I am wondering if the prospective employers think he might be sick. Have any of you had similar experiences? Any suggestions? I was thinking that maybe he should tell them right out that he is not sick and explain the condition. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Should someone get fired over their hair style?tag:alopeciaworld.com,2008-05-08:2022678:Topic:413192008-05-08T15:08:46.270ZCarolhttps://alopeciaworld.com/profile/Carol29
In the news today (May 8) I heard about this woman who was hired by Canada's Wonderland and was fired on her first day because she had dreadlocks. The person that interviewed her did not think her hair was "extreme" however someone else did on her first day. I know I have been discriminated against due to my appearance and I was just curious what everyone's thoughts were on this.
There was also a blog I posted a while ago about a boy in Oregon who shaved lines in his eyebrows and the school not allowing him in until he shaved them off. These are people who are deliberately changing their image. What if someone can't change their image, should any of us be forced to wear a wig to remain employed??
