Hi Sara,

Thank you so much for sharing this successful treatment news. I am so happy that you have found something that will help grow your hair back. That is fabulous.

Like you, I have had alopecia areata for about ten years, maybe longer. The patches have come and gone, but they are currently at their worst. I haven't done any treatments for about three years because I have either been pregnant or nursing (I have two babies under two).

In August, I am going to see my dermatologist to make a plan of action for when I stop nursing, which will probably be this October - 2013. My daughter, Annie Kathryn, will be eight months by then. Before having kids, I used Anthralin, and it worked, but the results weren't super amazing. For the past six months, I have used the IGrow Laser Helmet here at home for 25 minutes every other day. It might be working because I do have small regrowth, but it's not super duper hair if you know what I mean.

Sadly, right now my hair is falling out with fierceness. I hate taking my morning showers because I have to get that damn clump....it is horrible. You know exactly what I am talking about. It's crazy because the hair loss makes me anxious. And that is the last thing that my body needs, extra anxiety. I want to take an antidepressant to cool my emotions, but it's not all that safe with nursing either. Then there is a part of me that wonders if my body just produces more stress hormones in general, making the hair loss even worse. It is a tough thing to figure out. I know once I am done nursing I am also going to take something to blunt the emotions a bit. Have you ever considered taking something for anxiety?

I have read about squaric acid a lot on Alopecia World, and I have seen it in a few health magazines.

What is the difference between Squaric or Cyclopropenone or DNCB? Are they one in the same?

Do you know the percentage or dose that the pharmacy made for you? It seems like they come in different strengths. Is that right? Please tell me what you started with. And was it a private pharmacy or did you go to a chain like Rite Aid?

Thanks for sharing all of your research. I saw that you want to study dermatology. That's awesome. You have helped me a lot!! I think you should go for it, girl.
Thanks Sara

What my doc did was she applied a much stronger version of it on my upper forearm.... then after 2 weeks I was going to use it about 5x a week. I keep the acid myself and have my mom apply it and I keep it at room temp as well. Using the acid all my hair grew in last summer and in Sept. it started falling out again I also stopped using it but was also under alot of stress so maybe both factors starting my hair falling out again. But from now on i apply it almost everywhere even if there arent…

Hi Sara. My dermatologist suggested this, but said I would have to go to another clinic to have it applied and she could not get it at her office due to the fact that it had to be kept at a very cold temperature. Do you keep it yourself and apply it yourself at home? I have ophiasis/diffuse loss and am currently on Methotrexate which has slowed down the loss, but I cannot seem to regrow the nape area. Also, if you stop using it, will your new growth fall out again?

Yes I have tried anthralin and like u said it doesn't work it's mostly or milder cases. I have tried literally everything spent thousands of dollars on rays medications etc. the acid is much more stronger then the anthralin. It had more if an effect

Sara,

Are you in NYC. You mentioned Brooklyn. I havent been to a derm in ages. I have had this for close to 30 years now. I dont think it would grow back but I would prefer to go to a derm that works with this.

Thank you so much,
LD

This treatment sounds like it has the same reaction as anthrallin cream, an irritating, itchy, and slightly burning sensation. The cream causes discoloration and flaking, and didn't work for me, but I've been told it has worked for milder cases. Have you tried this, or did your doctor give it as an option? It may be a more available option for someone looking for something new to try.

thank you! I just want to try it all because I am so desperate for my hair to grow back. I am sick of feeling the cool breeze of the air on the back of my head when the wind blows a certain way :-( I know it will grow back, just impatient so Im willing to try anything!

No the lymph nodes aren't bad ... You shouldn't worry about that it just means the acid is working ... And not
I haven't tried it but I will soon! After a while of using it ur lymph nodes won't be inflamed anymore. I wish u the best of luck!
