I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
Hey Cheryl!!! I'm trying to stay awake -- someone switched my decaf for caffeinated coffee this morning and caffeine of any kind puts me to sleep like a tranquilizer!!! I sleep with my laptop in the bed with me so even if I'm online sometimes I'm not (i.e., work, sleep, LOL). I'm glad you stopped by!!!
P.S. How's the job market in the Great White North??? I'm planning my escape pending the outcome of the elections this fall.
Thanks! I pretty much think that quote has kept me going sometimes. Because it can be discouraging sometimes dealing with people in life, but then i remember that, & it helps me along. & thats not just dealing with alopecia, but my personality, & everything. =)
Its actually from a song that I heard. "Something to be proud of" by Montgomery Gentry. =)
Thank you so much! I think you are quite a gem yourself. =) A beautiful lady inside & out. & i love that you helped found this site, because it has literally changed my life.
I am POSITIVE about the snow!!! I used to live in Nebraska and I loved winter more than anything!! I am hot-natured like nobody's business and I love the cold weather more than anything!!! Just once, I want it to snow in Memphis up to my neck!!!
Thank you so much for tellin me about that its so nice to know that iam not alone in this. So how long have you had alopecia if u dont mind me asking. As dumb as this sounds i really want to normal but then i ask myself what is normal? Do you or have you ask the same questions?
Thanks so much. I am full of questions, but most of all i know that my daughter is. I haven't told her that i have the page just of yet. I like to check things out and have knowledge before taking it to her. I will be showing her around the site and if she is comfortable enough we will set her page up. She wants MYspace page but knows that is a NO NO!.
Thanks again for the warm welcome.
Hey Cheryl. Thanks so much for the welcome. I'm really impressed with this website....Thea from Bald Girls Do Lunch sent me the link and I love it!!! It's really good to see other people just like me....I can tell I'm going to meet a lot of really great people! Take care--Daria
Cheryl...stupid question, but computer genius I'm not! How do you make the little slide show of photos on your home page? I know it goes in that "widget" box....
oh ic! ;) i just got myn tatted on (eyebrows!!!) they are awwesome!!!/b-e-a-u-tiful!! i got a lil eyeliner too so that i looks like eyelashes!!! BOOHYAH~~!!
Thank you very much Cheryl for the warm welcome. I am hoping my experiences here will help me to learn how to better cope with this issue because so far I'm having a bit of a time with it! Thank you again for writing.
Uh, the Tigger blanket was on the back of my chair because occasionally it got cold in the call center. And if you look at the date, Alopecia World hadn't been born yet -- otherwise it would have been there!
Hi Cheryl
Thankyou for the welcome. It's great being able to talk with others about alopecia. I had never heard of it until a month after loosing my hair. I honestly cope with it surprisely well though, not that it's always easy, it just doesn't bother me. your profile says you're engaged, I was wondering if you're going bald or wearing a wig or scarf for your wedding? I'm engaged too and I'm just unsure of what to do. I was also wondering where your brother-in-law is from (dumouchel). Maybe I'm related to him. it's not a common last name.
I am fine. and you? My daughter is great! She is being a real trooper about the entire situation. Kids have a way of amazing us. We are going to the meet n greet basketball game in DC with Charlie Villanueva so she is excited about that. It's been good to talk to people and see how they are dealing with their issues. Now I feel like someone understands what I am going through. I hope that your days are good and stay beautiful!
Hi Cheryl! Thanks for such a warm welcome. I can feel the love that came with every greeting and I know this is definitely a great place to be. I have two adult sons who shaved bald when their hairline began to recede. They prefer to stay bald. They have not sought medical advice re their hairloss so I can't say that they have alopecia. I do have a friend that says she does have it though and I want to learn more about the causes and cures of hairloss. I plan to share information about this site with my sons (however, I don't know if they will care to join) and my friend whom I know will be more than happy to join and share. Delete Comment
HI girlfriend, Your page is great! I still not sure how to customize my page. When CJ gets off 12 hour shifts this week he is going to help me. I want all my friends to email me lots of pictures of the conference this year!!! Maybe you could get a group together and give me a call while you are there! Have a great day!! Miss you all bunches!!!
HI Cheryl, We sure do hate we want be able to be there. CJ's daughter is graduating from a college in California. This is where we will be that weekend!! This is why I said to take pictures and send some to me!!!
Hi Cheryl, How and where would I find out who deals with hair system and is a beautician on this site, I've found some but it will take me a long time to read everyones page. Any advise on how I could put something out there for these members to see?
Thanks for the welcome! I'm actually going to be visiting Montreal this summer for the first time! I've been backpacking all over Europe but I've never even been to Eastern Canada... how funny is that!
I can't believe how many people have commented on my page since I joined! I think I'm really going to like it here :)
Hey Cheryl...it was easy once I clicked on the right buttons. Duh...I can be a little slow sometimes! By the way, this site is amazing. I am so happy to have found it and been able to talk with everyone. It is a really positive thing you've done here.....thank you!!!!!
Thank you for the kind welcome. I will visit here often and hopefully, as I have been helped so many times in the past, I can help someone else. Because I know it can just take one... little... thing... to make ME be the one needing someone's encouragement again.
