I am 34 years old, married to a wonderful man and have 3 beautiful children, with a 4th on the way--due end of April 2009.
I found out I had AA at age 14. The loss has been up and down: age 14-21 AA (spots that could be covered), age 22-23 AT, age 24-31 minor AA (just a few spots), 2006-present AU.
I never thought I would say this, but I am truly grateful that I have AA because it has pushed me and stretched me and made me so much stronger. I am more confident in myself now than I have ever been because I finally realize that the true me does not reside in my hair or any other part of my appearance. The true me is the soul that lives within. Letting go of the world's perceptions of beauty, a mold that so few fit, and accepting myself for who I am as a person has made me so happy. I no longer envy others the way I did (with and with out hair). I know that I am beautiful and it does not come from what I see in the mirror, it comes from within. It has been a long climb getting here, and I still have a long way to go, but it is sure a magnificent view!
Thanks for the comment too....Ditto! I'm glad you see it in yourself now, because you are beautiful but most importantly what stands out about you is that you have a beautiful spirit...beautiful energy.
We force people to not look at what society has made important (Outer ONLY) but we force them to see us for who WE are!
Kudos to your husband and to the Unconditional, Non-Judgemental LOVE of your children, they make our worlds so much more Brite! I have to share...my girls still play in my "hair" as if I had some...like they used too:))))) and my son 13 will not go a day without kissing my head... Life is so much more than Hair!
Hi Shannon. You're right...we do seem to have some things in common. (By the way, my husband even has that same striped shirt your husband is wearing in one of your photos!) Your pics are great, kids are precious. I've really loved being part of this website....believe me, you will definitely find some good friends here who can relate to everything!! Hope to talk to you again soon!
Hey Shannon!! You're right, it is nice to know there are other people in the world dealing with this and Im not alone. I wish there were noone dealing with it, that would be awesome. Im not sure what my hairloss is called but it started with losing alot of weight and taking an antidepressant. I still have enough hair to get by, i guess, but i have to style it so much and use a concealeer so my scalp isnt so noticeable. The more Im on here the more I want to just shave it all off and be done. Or at least get it cut really short and wear a wig. Do youwear wigs out in public? Are they awful? By the way, you are gorgeous and you're family?? You all should be in magazines. :)
Hey Shannon...how are you? Guess what? Got my brows and eyeliner tattooed on this past week. It wasn't fun, but I'm SOOO GLAD I did it! Brows look great! I also like the eyeliner, but think I'm gonna get her to go back and make it just a little thicker on the top lid to give more of an illusion of a lash line. Yay,...I'm so happy!!!
Hi Shannon,
Yes, my girls are from China. I wish I could adopt again but so many things have changed in China.... and Haiti also I think (well, at least here, in Canada).... I can not believe it... here I am, speaking about adoption again!!! :)) I've registered on this social network to discuss alopecia...I'm incorrigible!
Tell me, are you going to Louiseville? I'll go for the 1st time and I'm very excited about it!

Shannon-
Your wig looks adorable!!! I swear I would never know it wasnt real. So, tell me, is it human hair or synthetic? AND, where did you get it?
Im going to the beach this summer and to the mountains and Im trying to explore my options if my hair gets any worse. I am TRULY thinking of trying a shorter cut and it I cant mask the hairloss, then Im going to get a short wig, kinda like yours, but with shorter bangs.
Thanks for writing me back!! I think I will go to a wig shop and just look at the short wigs. I tried on long ones before and I dont know, they just didnt appear real. Almost seemed like too much hair, ya know? I need a new style anyway. Do you find that it stays on pretty easy? Is there anything you cant do while wearing it? I like to work out, so I wonder if that would work? Anyway, if you go to the lake or beach or near water, what kind of headcovering do you wear because I dont want people to see my hiar wet as it is very thin, but I dont want to miss out either. I didnt get in the ocean last year ans I miss playing with my boys.
Thanks for the info! Your right, braids and a bandana would be good.
Everyone might wonder why I have a bandana on, but who cares. I had skin cancer on my scalp and had to have surgery back in 2003 so I really shouldnt be in the sun without a hat or something anyway.
How much did you pay for the cute short wig that is in your pictures if you dont mind me asking?
hey shannon,
i love all of your pics! question: when you were pregnant, did your hair grow back? also, i have au too and i am thinking of getting eyebrows tatooed and eyeliner. did you get that done and are you happy you did?
