About Me:
There was never a time when I did have hair. The alopecia that I have is a genetic condition starting from birth. Several people in my family have it. Basically, one has a 50/50 chance of inheriting it from a parent.
I've always tried to hide it, and childhood was horrible. Things have changed alot since then. Now I have 3 beautiful children. My daughter, Boniblu, is 6 yrs. and has alopecia. I have twin boys, Max and Cash who are almost 4 yrs. Cash has alopecia and Max does not have it. Boni is nothing like I was at that age. She is strong, confident, and outgoing. She hates to wear her wig, so mostly she wears a hat or bandanna. She just started kindergarten and loves it. I let her teacher know before school what to expect and how to help her. We also gave her a book about alopecia to read to the kids to help them understand it better, and took pics of Boni as a baby. The hardest part is not knowing other people with alopecia. We live in a small area and you just don't meet other young people with alopecia.
Having children has helped me so much. How? Well, I can't hide it anymore for one thing. When people ask, I tell them Boni has alopecia and she inherited it from me.
Well, I could go on forever with my story. Want to know more - just ask.
ps there are lots of types of wigs out there. Synthetic, human hair, cyberhair, semi-permanent. I've tried almost all of them, except cyberhair. Give me some feedback, what do you like best?
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia areata
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes

Welcome to AlopeciaWorld! I personally like human hair wigs because I can style them. When I wore wigs and weave, it was human hair.

You are such a good mother...brave and strong. My daughter is in Kinder as well and I have met a liitle boy in Kinder that has your condition as well. he was born with no hair and it is genetic. He is brave and outgoing just like your daughter. I guess our children will grow up confident as Alopecia is so recognised these days. There is no school that has four kids with alopecia over here so it is definitely more open nowadays.

Have you heard of the Freedom wig. I think they are the best....

    Hi Gina,
Yes, there are a lot of wigs -- I think it's best to have both human hair and synthetic. I love synthetic for travel and when I am working out, because it is so easy to clean and there's no styling. Human hair other times.
Well, I just wanted to say hi and find out how you and Boni are doing today!

Great! Please let me know how you like my book, okay? You can get it on www.Amazon.com or www.leslieannbutler.npauthors.com.
I know, the glue-down thing doesn't appeal to me...I haven't tried it but I don't like the idea of wearing a wig 4-6 weeks straight -- I like to keep my scalp clean and when stuff is glued to it, how can you do that?
A lot of people swear by the vaccuum wigs. You can choose either the soft, flexible base as well or the hard base. I never got one of those because my head gets so hot. I alternate between human hair with poly base (which is also hot), human hair with a silicone covered netted base -- which is nice and cool), and the synthetics which are very cool and easy.

  • MARIA (mom of Savanna)

    Hello Gina,
First of all I want to say your kids are adorable!!!
My name is Maria and I have a 6yr old daughter also and she is the one with AU, her name is Savanna...she has had it since she was 3yrs old, we do not do any treatments at this time, but I am strongly considering trying something, but I havent totally convinced myself yet that it would be best for her. Savanna is a well adjusted with her condition but she has had several bad experiances with this disease. She too doesnt often wear wigs only when she is playing or take the notion to put one on in the house...but in public it is only HATS!!!

    love to talk...Maria

    Dear Gina:
With having so much experience with alopecia and having a daughter that is quite close in age with mine, I wondered if I could ask you some questions some time? Thank you in advance,
    Cynthia (B.C.,Canada)
