About Me:
Hi I am Nicky and I have had Alopecia since 2005- well it all grew back and then all fell out again so now I am totally bald , no eyelashes or eyebrows. Sometimes it really gets to me - sometimes I don't think about it- but I do wear a wig during the day and a bandana at home.My husband is supportive but I am sure he would prefer if I had hair and my kids jsut know that mummy's hair fell out.
But hey - life could be worse !

    Hi there Nicky,

I realised that you live in Australia too. Do you live in Mel?

    Hey Nicky,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you plan on going surfing, be prepared to do it bald -- the currents and the strength of the waves will knock off anything on your head -- glasses, hats, scarves, whatever. I learned that lesson the hard way when my dad taught me how to surf. I can't tell you how many hats and scarves I've lost -- although for me, it wasn't so much to cover up the fact that I was bald as it was to keep my bald head from getting sunburnt!! Surfing and being out on the beach can be a great healing experience for you -- I would recommend doing it anyway and just make sure you keep lots of sunscreen on!!!

By the way, welcome to Alopecia World!!!

HI Nicky, We are going to start selling soon a product called DeeDeeDoos, it is a sweatband with hair sewned inside it also has a long pony tail. I wear a skullcap over mine I wear mine everyday and even when I go biking. It would be perfect for you to use for surfing and swimming. I could send you some pictures. I also make soft cotton sleepcaps with pretty lace around them. They are what I wear at home, I am making them also. Let me know if you are interested.

Hi Nicky, I'm also on the sunnie coast...good to meet you! I've only been to one of the support meetings as I work weekends and it's difficult to get to them. I've been a member of another alopecia support group on the web and it's helped me through some tough times. Good to find this one too. I wonder how many other sunnie coasters there are? I emailed Angela one time about arranging a lunch/coffee for alopecians in our neck of the woods. If you're ever interested let me know and we could organise something.

Hi Nicky, I'm in Nambour...I'll be away in Melbourne at the end of the week so how about meeting up sometime after that? Wednesday's are usually good for me too, so let's tentatively say 7th May at the Coffee Club Mooloolaba 10.30am? It'll be good to meet you.
  • Pat

Okay that'll be great. I'll be the one with husband in tow [probably] - he's a coffee addict like me and won't pass up a chance to have one too. Looking forward to meeting you and your daughter...a recent pic of me is at my page so you'll recognise me.
  • Pat

Good to meet up with you yesterday and touch base with another alopecian...I wonder if there are any more on the sunny coast? Your daughter's comment will go down in my book as one I'll always remember..did you tell your husband? I bet he got a good laugh too, it was hilarious! Will keep in touch

Hey Nicky, back from Thailand with my new teeth...false eyebrows, false hair and now false teeth, not much of my real face left...I seem to remember you saying you had a petite size head like me...if so I have a custom lace base wig I've never worn or had cut-in. It is auburn. If you think you'd like to do something with it you're welcome. Let me know.
  • Pat

Hi Nicky, yep that'll be great. John has had the flu since coming home from BKK - he ended up with bronchial pneumonia and was flat on his back for days. I'm normally never sick since I've had alopecia but this time I got a head cold which I know won't last long. Having him out of action has put us back workwise though, so we have some catching up to do. Suddenly everyone wants their windows cleaned! See you in a few weeks.
  • Pat

Hi Nicky, I forgot to say just put a little smear of the glue around the wig edge from ear to ear. I wouldn't worry about the back. The wig I'm wearing in this pic is the same, just wavy, and you'll be surprised when it's cut in [assuming it fits your head]. Anyway let me know how it works out or not as the case may be.
  • Pat

Yes best not to use a hairdryer on synthetic wigs. Do you have a hairdresser who will cut in the other wig? It is Remy hair [human but processed] so you can use a hairdryer on it but in my experience its better to let it dry overnight. I find wigs dry pretty quickly once you put it on - must be the heat from the head.

Hi Nicky, how've the school holidays been for ya? Hope you are doing well. Did your sister end up coming for a holiday? I've been to Adelaide to see my grandson who's 10, and also visited my parents - lots of issues with them. Stayed with friends to de-stress!! Glad to be home, but I wish my grandson lived closer to us.
  • Pat

Nicky, no problems....hope you had a great time while she was here. We're off to Cairns in a couple of weeks...I'm really looking forward to it. We may end up staying in Pt. Douglas or somewhere outside Cairns as it's not a 'doing' holiday but a relaxing one..we're only gone for a few days. Maybe we can catch up after that. Like you say, time goes by so fast. I'd really like to know if there are more people with aa in this area - don't you think it would be good to start a support group? I'd be all for it.

    hi nickey

Hey Nicky how your going? Did you have a good xmas? We had our grandson and his mum with us for 3 weeks...mostly did the beach, John took him to movieworld and they had a great time. At 10 he's growing up very fast. How did that wig turn out, did it fit and if so did you get it cut in? Just wondering. I've had a new wig made up, darker than my last one but I'm getting used to it now. It was so long I had heaps cut off it but still kept it to just shoulder length. I think you'd look great in a blonde wig...what was your natural colour? I'd love to go blonde but it looks ridiculous on me...shame...
