Porcia, I have had alopecia for 30 yrs and have been a hairdresser for 32. Life is ironic, eh? In some ways, I think it has been an asset for me. Sure keeps my clients from bitching about 'bad hair days'..keeps them in perspective. Also, since what we do as hairdressers is largely social work and therapy (I also got my BA in social work in 1987 but couldn't afford to work in the field), they know that because of what I have been through, they can open up about sensitive subjects. It is a great profession. You get to be creative, and with the physical touch involved, there is a vulnerability and closeness that most other professions don't experience. Keep it up, and DON"T listen to your family. They are projecting their OWN fears and embarrassment onto you. Don't accept it. Make your own family..that's what conference is all about, I have made my own alopecian family that totally GETS and ACCEPTS me.
