Hi! So nice to see you. How are you doing with aa? Are you okay? I've had it for 30 years.

It varies so much! Some people lose their hair rapidly, and with others it can come and go. I had patchy spots for years, and then one day they started getting bigger and bigger. I think it took several months for it all to fall out, including eyelashes and eyebrows. Bye bye hair! Never saw it again!
If you want lots of good info and some extra support, you might want to read my book! It's a fun read as well as answering a ton of questions.
    xo!

Fab! It's called "If Your Hair Falls Out, Start Dancing!" There's a link on my page, or cut and paste this: www.leslieannbutler.npauthors.com
It's available on Amazon too, but if you order it online from this web site, you'll get a 30% discount.
Let me know how you like it, will you?

    Hi Supermom,
Being a mom is the best job in the world, I have two sons ages 14 and 17 and now that their teenagers we still have a lot of fun. Keep up the good work.

    Bonjour!
Retrospectively, I can say that the period when the hairs is falling is the hardest one... shortly after as well is very hard but we are made stronger than we think! Are you trying some treatments?

    Hello Supermom!!
I am just now getting back to the wonderful messages of thoughts and prayers for my daughter, Kristin. I had the best sleep in 10 days last night because she is home from the hospital. Thank you for thinking of us and your prayers were heard loud and clear. Hope all is well with you and yours.
    Love and Hugs,
    Dotty
P.S. I ran a daycare for seven wonderful years and I now have 5 wonderful children (well more like 4 teens and one child...uggh) living with me along with Kristin who is 21. I too, love children and the total honesty and unconditional love they have!!! Hope to get to know you better.

Hi Supermom! I got my wig from a little shop very near my home. There are lots of great websites you can go to, but I suggest going to a shop for your first time if you have that option. It's just nice to have someone helping you in person and then they can style/shape it how you want right then and there.

I'm sorry to hear you're starting to get spots on top. :( Keep your chin up and try not to worry too much. There are definitely worse things in this world than alopecia.

    Hugs,
    Mandy

    Hi SuperMom,
I saw your message on Mandy's page that said you have pretty much the opposite hair as her just now. I'm sure further down the page, I've said exactly the same thing!
My hair is pretty much gone (apart from the odd rogue patch) from two inches above my ears all the way around my head. I was close to coping with that state of affairs but when I got a penny sized dot on the top of my head, I started looking into wigs. Now, I'm at the stage that whenever I'm at something important for work or if I just want to have nice looking hair, I put on my wigs. For sport and at home, I still go au naturale. The wigs have been good for me as I know that if I wake up tomorrow and way more has fallen out, I'll be able to face the world! Doesn't replace the hair that's lost but what can we do?

    Hi Supermom,
Just wanted to stop by and say that I hope you enjoy your re-union. I keep bumping into folk when I'm out and about who haven't seen me for ages and whether I'm wearing my wig or just my own hair, they don't seem to bat an eyelid. I think when you've not seen folk for a while they do expect you to have changed. It's the people who saw just a month or so ago who notice the difference. I think the main thing is not to go into a stressful social situation without making sure you are comfortable first in what you're wearing. Although, in saying that, the first night I wore my wig, I wore it to a sports club party where pretty much everyone was guaranteed to notice the big change in me. And I was fine with it. So maybe there are no hard and fast rules.

I'm rambling now - have fun at the re-union.
  • Erica

    Hi,
No I haven't shaved my head. I just wear my wigs over my remaining hair. This is so that I can still go about without any covering on my head at all and not stand out too badly. Although I don't go anywhere like this when I'm bothered about looking good as you can see my bald spots nearly all the time now. I had that changing room moment you mentioned a few months ago. It's horrible realising you've been walking around for ages with a patch showing to everyone.

I know some folk wear toppers if they still have hair left - they're lighter than full wigs but you need to get them cut in to suit your existing hair.
I'm afraid I don't know too much about buying in Canada but on the heralopecia boards there is tonnes of information from a user named Merry who has posted all sorts of helpful hints on buying the right topper and not being ripped off! Reading her posts on that forum might prove useful before your shopping expedition at the weekend.

I saw that youve been to Japan too?

    Hi Supermom!
Thanks for the message! It was so nice! That's great that you went to UVic...I love it here. I bet it's grown and changed a lot from when you were here. There's lots of construction going on around campus. It's such a great city to live in. It's nice to meet people from BC. Having alopecia at this age has been a challenge, but i wouldn't change it for the world. It's definitely shown my what's really important in life and changed me for the better. I'm sorry to hear that all your hair is coming out. Keeping busy is definitely the way to avoid dwelling on it, but it's always hard. Sounds like you have an awesome family! I have three siblings...big families are the best! Talk to you soon :)

    Hi there,
I am in Vancouver (kitsilano) - i haven't called yet, as I'm traveling a lot in April - once I'm back after the 20th, I was going to call to find out more about the support class. I'm one year bald & thought I was doing just great, but, I think I need a little more support! No shame in that....I will be happy to let you know when I find out more about it. I DO know that it's close to the hospital (VGH) in around that area at a hair loss clinic. I went there once to see a Dr. Shapiro - decided against his chemical treatments, but am definitely interested in the group. Feel free to message me any time...
