My name is Brandi Gurley and I've had alopecia since I was 10 years old. I am now 25. When it first started falling out it was in spots. But then when I was 14 it all fell out. It was terrible. Going through school with people talking and whispering and pulling off my wig because they thought it would be funny. But it got better. I had some of the best friends that tried to protect me. I was also a cheerleader from 6th grade-12th grade. I wasn't going to let the fact that i had no hair prevent me from doing the things that i made me happy.
But having alopecia universalis does have it's advantages like not ever having to shave. My husband really likes that. I've been married for almost 3 years. I wear a hairpiece from Peggy Knight Solutions. My husband would rather me just go without it but I guess its a girl thing. The only time that I really go without my wig is when I'm at home with my husband or around my family. All my friends know, but it's different with them knowing and actually showing them. I have went without it around my really close friends, but not many off them.
I use to be very self conscience about it, but now I really don't care if people know or not. Except when people think I'm sick, or have cancer, or feel so sorry for me. Yes this happened but I'm healthy, I'm happy, and I have a great husband that loves me just the way I am.
I haven't went to the doctor in like 10 years cause i tried every treatment that was legal in the US. Some worked but most didn't so I just decided if it comes back great and if it doesn't thats fine too.
Welcome to the National Bald Out Group! I'm so excited that so many people have joined.
My husband loves me bald, and encourages me to go out uncovered. I tried wigs...I really did. But, I just have a very hot scalp and couldn't do it. I wear scarves (my YouTube video "Alternatives to Wearing a Wig" shows them) when I want some cover and it's cool, but most of the time, I just shine!
