karina, I have had the best luck with the paula young wigs. they carry Jackyl smith wigs too which are youthful. I always had very long hair, it was my crowning glory. when all this happened to me i didnt think i would survive without it. God carfully selects interesting people to be bald. your hair does not make Karina who she is. I wish i could wear more scarves out in public, but since i am a hairdresser, my boss woulod have a fit!!!!! I have been lucky being able to wear cheaper wigs (tough old noggin' I guess) a wig liner might give you added comfort. Since i have no hair, sometimes my "baldness" peaks thru the wefts of hair on some of the shorter wigs......hmmmm what would McGiver do????? I found a soft cotton brown sock, cut it into a long piece and laid it inside the wig then put it on. i killed 2 birds with one stone. cant see my pink scalp and it makes a cuddly soft liner which kepps you head from getting scratchy. I rinse them out periodically, keeps the wigs cleaner. So, girlfriend, where do you live???? do i need to brush up on my highschool spanish???? haha have a great day ! bk

    Hi Karina!

Thanks! I am still able to cover my spots with my hair- so what you see in my picture is my hair. In the past I've tried the clip in hair extension- to make certain area's fuller..... NO
luck. They hurt and I thought looked obvious.

Sorry I do not know much about wigs- but from what I read on this site it seems the vacuum wigs are a great choice! The most secure anyway. I would imagine a problem with any wig this
time a year is how hot they get. Another thought- I have
emailed a couple of wig companies with questions- (just in case I need one) and they all responded quickly with answers! You may try that? Also on the site Web MD- Amy Gibson from Amy's
presence wigs is the consultant and you can ask questions there
for her to answer.... hope that helps! :)

    Have a great day,
    Heather

    Hello Karina
I have a lace front wig I got off of Ebay and it is very comfortable. I also have 2 elastic thin scalp wigs 1 I got at a shop in the town my mom lives in and I love them as well
I have told a few of my close friends and family members and they have been supportive

    Hi Karina,

Yes, I'm wearing a wig in that picture, but I have to admit - I don't have alopecia. I wear a wig for religious reasons. Orthodox Jewish women wear wigs to cover their hair. You can read more about this in my 2-part article "Headed in the Right Direction: the Head Covering as Marker of a Jewish Woman's Identity," which you can find on my webpage, the Brooklyn Jewish Examiner. Part II primarily deals with wigs, but Part I will give you context.

In terms of your questions to me, I'm wearing a custom human hair wig, and you can find out all about the latest wigs and wig brands available in my community in the resources box on my Brooklyn Jewish Examiner page. I hope this helped, and please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
  • Yvette

Hi Karina, Yes, I have a wig on in this pic. It is a Racheal Welche "bewitched" wig. It's very comfy for me considering I'm bald so I wear a little cap under it and the wig has 3 different spots where it sticks to my head. I hope this info helps. Take care, Yvette
  • Tallgirl

I have had keneculon, human hair and synthetic wigs, of all lengths, colors and styles. I once even got a long. curly one called "Tango," but it kept getting caught in my back buttons. Currently, I wear a 1990s Liz Taylor look, or a short auburn/brunette dual colored wig. All of these are under $250 with only elastic to keep them on. I don't do as many physically risky things at my age, so I don't worry about the slippage factor, and I don't date so no worries there. elastic.
  • ErinMichele

I have human hair with a monotop. Its comfortable but it was expensive. I am getting married in August so that is why I did the HH but otherwise I probably would have gotten synthetic.
  • lidia

    Hi...
Belive me.... it took alot to get to this point. One thing i wish i had done was to go to a therapist...a psychologist or a support group.. so you dont feel alone. i hope you can find that where you live.
  • Theresa

Only your doctor can answer your questions - I wish I could. Yes, this is a wig...I only feel comfortable with my scarf on, or bald with very close friends and family. I wear a scarf when I'm biking outdoors...but the wig is in the backpack for when I arrive at my destination. I don't know how the internet works for you in another country...but we have great wig outlet type of stores online - I like the Revlon line of wigs which are designed for sensitive scalps. You pay $180.00 they last me about three months. I hope this helps, and I'm going to research "Telogen Effluvium" to see what that is all about. I'm very sorry for what you are going through. God bless you and, call out to him in prayer for comfort. Write anytime Terry

Hey Yes wigs can be uncomfortable, But never painful? maybe go to some who specialises with wigs for people with hairloss even if it for cancer patients they are brilliant... that what i did when i got my first wig!!
With the image i feel the same, i have 4 wigs and still think i look silly, but no one else seems to notice! It hard because its a foreign body on your head.
But i hope you start to feel more comfortable soon.
Just remember to keep smiling :)
  • sanniesan

    hi karina!!
    how are you?
i have a new wig since one week it is a short one, blond with different coulors. some people say it looks like victoria beckham. i dont have a picture of myself yet.
i never wear wigs of real hair, always synthetic ones.
it is easy to wash it. i hope you can do something with it. sandra.
  • Jess

Hi Karina i bought lots different colour beanie hats they make me feel good -jess
  • Tallgirl

So WHAT if they "notice?" They will also notice that you are braver than they are, and if they get rude, just hand them a print-out about alopecia and let them read it while you are not watching. If they have been rude, they can simmer in their own guilt and you have preserved your dignity and gone on to happier adventures. Your happy attitude will make people notice you. Wouldn't you rather be remembered around town for a happy attitude and strength rather than sad-face and complaints? Get out there, girl, and enjoy this marvelous world!

Hi Karina, Those are my 2 grandsons. I wear a human hair wig that was custom made for me. I had a mold made of my head, and waited and waited and waited and about 6 months later, I finally received a wig that fit, after sending one back that was way too big. That was about 4 years ago, and now I am about to start the whole process over again, and I hate the idea of it.
It's as comfortable as any other wig, but after 10 years of wigs, I'm trying to make this one last as long as I can. I understand that you are afraid of what it will be like if all your hair falls out. Hopefully, this group can give you support to help get you through it. I found out it's not the end of the world, sometimes it's harder than others.
Yes, I am of Italian descent, 3 of my grandparents were born in Italy, and all of my great grandparents were born in Italy. My husband is also of Italian descent. Are you? I thought maybe that was why you asked.
  • Pat

hi karina, the wig is terri by bobbi boss. its okay for comfort i dont wear a wig cap i just put it on. how about you? wigs, bandanas or bald?
  • Kelly

Hey Katrina, I wear hand tied wigs - sorry, the name of the type of cap has slipped my mind. But basically the wig cap is clear so that I can pull the hair back anywhere and you just see my scalp so it makes it look more real and gives me more options for styling. I wear it in pig tails to the gym! They're made my Louise Ferre.

Hi, no I don't wear a wig, I used to when I was still in school, I had an Advanced Hair Studio's wig, we had huge drama with them...they shaved off all my remaining hair to fit the customed made wig, the wig's hair started to fall out, and then they expected me, 16 years old, to walk with no hair while they send the wig back for repairs, we were devestated and my parents refused, they ended up making a 2nd wig which I wore while the first one was being repaired. I have hair now, but it takes some mastermind moves to keep it all closed...but it's falling out fast and I don't see where I'm going to go to from here, and I'm scared to death!
  • Eleanor Giarnelli

Hi Karina, If you should have to wear a wig someday, I have found that most people don't realize that it's a wig, and even people who know, often forget about it as time goes by. My family was from Sicily, Molise and Viterbo. I had very thick dark hair, also, but now, what little has come back is sparse, white, and brittle.
How do you try to manage the stree? Hair loss is very stressful by itself, have you tried somethink like Yoga, or other stress releiving programs? I am amazed at how good your English is.
  • Wendy

Thank you Karina. My wig is a 100 % Kanekalon, spectablend modacrylic fiber. I purchased it from a store here in Ottawa. I believe the wigstore.com has similar ones. Check it out
    take care
  • Saskia Fourie

My wigs were pretty comfortable, I had to stick them to my scalp in the front with double sided tape, so it didn't move! Loads of people knew about it, but being in school with 2500 pupils, there was constantly someone to hide it from, and I never "embraced the baldness" like they say, so I to date still hide my spots from my fiance...I have always considered myself to be extremely strong, but I just never was strong enough to do that!
  • Pat

the wigs dont caus me any pain but it just feels like i have a cap on my head.
  • ana

hello ... thanks alot for your message... i think im gonna need to start wearing wigs or do something... my hair is falling out too much... i just dont know where to start or where to look, i dont know anyone close to me that is going through what im going through i just feel lost.

  • Kayleigh George

Thankyou... that isnt actually my wig its my friends!
Well, how iv coped is some people are rude and stare and I just say Im sorry have I got a hair out of place???? Just to make them think about what they doing! Luckily i have a few friends who has had hair lost who are my age and we all talk and share experiences, You have to hold your head up high and prove you are stronger than alopecia, I hate having no hair. But looking forward to having hair again. But Its quite fun changing wigs and confusing people lol!!!!
    xx
  • Saskia Fourie

I know how you feel, all I can do is wish you well, I know its not easy, and I'm allot like you...we should stick together, I keep telling myself anything is possible through prayer...so I'm holding on to that...xxx

its synthetic from raquel welschs line. has mono top. i love it!!! feel free to ask me anything!
  • Emily Horsley

Hi Karina, I wear a synthetic wig courtesy of NHS. I used to have a Lucinda Ellery System but found it very expencive and a big hassle. I'm quite happy with the on i have now. It fits really well and i play sport in it without worrying it's gonna come off.
  • Stephanie

You know what Karina. I don't even know who makes that wig--I'll look for the receipt and let you know. It is very comfortable. When I bought it, it was long so I had the man that used to cut my hair cut it short like this. I'll get back with you and thanks for the compliment!
  • Stephanie

My co-workers know and my friends know, but I am a teacher and I haven't told my students. Still looking for the name of the wig!!
  • Rivkah Writes

    Hi Karina,

I think the more customized the wig, the more comfortable it will be. There are wigs you can buy with nets customized to the size of your head, etc. Of course, every custom feature drives up the expense of your wig, but it's something to consider.

In terms of how I attach my wig, I make a small, tight little brain in the front of my hair to secure the comb on the front of the wig, just inside the bangs portion. Then I just pin my hair up, as flat as possible before putting on the wig. Wigs also come with combs that snap into place at the sides so you feel completely secure.

    Hope this helps!
    Rivkah

Hi Karina - that was "braid" I wanted to say in my previous post - not "brain"! Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I'm working with Thea Chassin from Bald Girls Do Lunch on a tour of Brooklyn Wig salons - we're scheduling for sometime in November. It will be a great opportunity to see the selection available to religious women - and to other communities of women who need wigs. I will keep you posted on updates, but let Thea know if you'd like to be a part of this.

Lo siento much tu situacion. Quidate much :) Dios la bendiga, Sarah

no problem - I guess I missed that part of your profile!
  • Emily Horsley

I've always had bald patches due to alopecia, when I was younger i managed to cover it reasonably well then when it got too difficult to hide and looked really scruffy I decided to shave it all off and wear a wig. My family are all fine and I don't wear a wig in front of them. I wear it to work and nobody has ever said anything. To be honest, no one is bothered. How would you react if you saw some one in a wheel chair or with a burn scar? You might wonder what happened but I'm sure you wouldn't judge them or be nasty. Have faith in people.
Why don't you try a few wigs on now before its a nesesity just to get a feel for them and get an idea of what suits you. Don't rush in - I've got 2 wigs I've never worn. And take a close friend with you who will be honest, brutily honest if necessary to get you something you feel comfortable with and suits.
When I had a Lucinda Ellery system I went from short mousey hair to gorgeous blonde hair all the way down my back - it felt amazing and I got loads of compliments but very expensive
Synthetic wigs are so easy to look after, far easier than styling your own hair - just put it on, that's it!
Don't be scared of loosing your hair - you'll be fine.
Let me know how it all goes - Good Luck
  • brenda kay

not really knowing from a medical view, i onjly can tell you that when i dyed my hair, it came out even faster. the less i moved it around, the less hair fell out. is that you in the picture with the beautiful long hair? are you covering grey? you might switch to a semi permanent color. those are less harmful to scalp and hair. good luck!!!!! bk
  • Emmi

well, my wig is very comfortable, and yes, hole my school know that i wear wig, but thats not weard... one day e have pink hair, short fringe, and the next day i have long, black hair. but I dont care, cause if they like me, it's not gonna depend on my hair. all my hair are syntethic. And your life's not gonna end yet! there's so many people out there who has alopecia, and all know what u go trough, also me, cause my alopecia started with "harmonic problems" or sometinghs like that... and stress, the time i had areata, i was VEARY stressed... but thats doesen say its how it gonna end for you, so try to loosen and not get to stressed
    Take care
    Emmi
  • Emily Horsley

I read up a little on your condition and it did say it can be agrivated by stress and anxiety so try not to worry - see your GP about the underlying conditions that may be responsible for your hair. It can sometimes feel like a vicious circle.
When I had just a few patches away from my hair line and parts that were thinning - I used a spray from lucinder Ellery - it's like make up for your head. It makes your scalp as dark as your hair and unless you get really close and examine your head - you cant tell!
  • sgomez

I have alopecia universalis. I do wear a wig. I have done so for over 24 years. I wear a wig for my own comfort as I don’t feel like having to answer questions all the time. I am used to the wig now but it can be uncomfortable in the heat- so I wear a bandana then. I realised a long time ago that my reaction to my baldness dictates how other people react. If I am ok with it the generally are and if I make big deal then other people do to. I am not saying I don’t have bad days- I have many but I try and just get on with it
  • Kelly

Hi Karina, I had to look up telogen effluvium, but now I know something new. Depression and grieving is normal so allow yourself time.

I did buy a wig the first time I began losing all my hair which was at age 13. Read my first blog for the full story. I dealt with it in all kinds of ways which I describe in that blog as well. It's not been an easy road for me, but I'm growing more accepting of it with time. I tell people I trust only. Sometimes people can tell I have a wig and might be rude and ask. Not much I can do about that but it makes me uncomfortable still.

It can take time to find the right wig and right fit for you. Give it time.
  • Bee

Hello Karina, the wig, which I use now looks completely fantastic, I have to say, but it itches all the time so it's not something I recommend, but there is one that I am waiting for and it's called freedom hair Wig and I have heard from everyone I know who also has alopecia that it does not itch and it looks fantastic and it is real hair.

Hope you'll find a nice wig

i dont know how summers are where you live, but in the Chicago summers (80-90 degrees) I have been tolerating the wigs well. I have found a few short styles(I have never worn short hair since i was too young to run from my mother) and I have never gotten so many compliments from people. I think I must have looked pretty bad with my long fuzzy hair. The funny thing I have learned is that people REALLY don't care that much about what we do or how we look. We seem to think that our appearance matters that much to others while it is ourselves that are so self-critical. I have dealt with my problem by joking around about it and by being frank and honest. I do choose which people I will reveal myself to, not all. Thinl about all the wonderful things in your life and count your blessings. Hair is such a small part of who you are and what you have. Chin up!!!!! BK

    Hi Karina
I have been tearing up my house looking for the type of wig that I have. If I can't find it soon, I'll go back to the place I purchased it. It is pretty comfortable to wear. I will admit that in the summer it can get pretty hot, but as long as I'm not out in the sun all day in it, its pretty comfortable. No one so far has laughed at me, and I think my co-workers have pretty much forgotten that I wear a wig and its just me which is comforting. I even gotten some compliments by strangers which is nice, but also strange in a way.

    Hola amiga!
You confio en Dios primeramente.
