I had alopecia areata from when I was 9 years old until about 21. At 21 I lost all of my hair. I wore "traditional" hairpieces for about 5 years and was miserable. I was in my late 20's and struggling to feel like myself. I could not swim or play the sports I loved so much. Then at a support group meeting one night I met a woman wearing a Freedom vacuum hairpiece. It changed my life. I placed an order a month later. I started wearing vacuum hairpieces about 14 years ago. I am so passionate about it I became an agent for Freedom Wigs in 2012. I love to help other sufferers move forward and live life!
Hi, Jody, it's nice to meet you. It's funny that you mention groups in our area because there is an event coming up July 17 (which is National Alopecia Day). Check out the Michigan group for more details. I think they are going to have an awareness table at the Royal Garage sale that day. Otherwise I am unaware of any formal support groups per say. But AW is such a great place for support. :)
