My name is Sandra Dubose-Gibson. I was born and raised in the Bronx, New York but as of 2007, I reside in Apex, North Carolina. I developed Alopecia Areata when I was 25 years old which has since developed into Alopecia Universalis. In 2009, I was diagnosed with Cicatricial Alopecia as well. As you know, the journey to regain self love and self acceptance due to Alopecia is different for everyone, so we must be gentle with ourselves. Not until 2008 was I ready to get over the pain and turn it into a point of power to go out without my wig and liberate my life. Today, I am an advocate for Alopecia and Autoimmune Disease Awareness. Helping others is my way of fighting back. I am a liberation life coach dedicated to helping people like us break free from low self-esteem and create the life we deserve in spite of our challenges.
On Saturday, March 26, 2011, I competed in a local beauty pageant and made history when I was crowned 2011 Mrs. Black North Carolina, the 1st Bald Beauty Queen of the state. I wanted to show the world that bald women are beautiful too and deserving of a crown.
I am a national inspirational speaker and singer/songwriter. I am glad to be a part of this community where we can all GROW through this experience together.
Stay connected and Stay beautiful, inside and out.
Welcome Sandra,
Congratulations on your new level of acceptance. I too have come a long way from my wig days!! I am so much happier and I love to spread awareness every chance I get. I am being featured in a local newspaper this month for "Alopecia Awareness Month." I'm really excited. I am going to go check out your website. Again, welcome to the family!!!
Love and Hugs,
Dotty
Hi Sandra, welcome to AlopeciaWorld, wish I had met you this Friday, I've been in St. Pauls, NC all weekend. Your Bald or Wiggin' Out experience sounds alot like mine, except I can't carry a note, lol, so no singing for me. I met a group here and one male in the group said he knew I was not from this area because women would be embarrassed to rock a Bald Head here. I just smiled and told him I feel sorry for anyone who feels their community wouldn't accept them Bald or not! Anyway, I'm glad you're here. I will be back in November and I will be in Raleigh, we will definitely have to get together for dinner or something. Take care, stay blessed and be Beautiful!
Sandra I loved the song, I let my three little grand daughter listen to it and they played it about a zillion times. Now they can't stop singing it, lol, all off tune, but it sounds like music from Heaven.
Hi Sandra, I wanted to welcome you to Alopecia World. I can honestly say that we are a great community here and I hope you enjoy the time you spend with us and we look forward to your input. Cheryl, co-founder
Hi Sandra!
I am from the Charlotte/ Burlington area. I am hoping to get an Alopecia support group going sometime soon, so I am trying to get the word out in NC. Please contact me if you have any questions and let me know if you are interested. It is all sort of up in the air for now.
Hi Ms Sandra, your welcome! I love lion pic too! I actually started in the lace wig business this year when I tried to find solutions for my hair loss. I did ALOT of research when trying to find out if lace wigs were something that would be suitable for me. I am wearing one in my pic!
Hello Ms. Sandra!
Your pictures are gorgeous!! I do not have alopecia, but I am inspire by your story. I want you to know that you look extremely pretty with or without your hair.
Compliment of the season to you and your family.
Sandra..hello and welcome..Your story sounds very familiar..I was tormented in school,by women, and even my family..On day someone took my hat for a beer collection..I know..LOL,and thats when I snapped, and said, thats it..If someone wants to laugh, then laugh at me..This is me,and its ""not my fault"'..Like you,I choose to accept myself as is,where is,rather that wait for my hair also..And decided to quit hiding myself..That was probably the hardest thing and the best thing I ever did..Its come and gone since then, but it was the biggest learning phase Ive ever experienced..I love your AA experience,story...You surely are very proud,as well you should be,and a great role model for so many that are just entering the whole process..I just wanted to say,God Bless you,and thanks for sharing your story so proudly..Good for you..Bob
I think you're a beautiful human being and your singing is wonderful. It was a pleasure to meet and share time with you. I'd love to see "I'm Beautiful" performed again on a trailer or You Tube....

Thank you!! =]

Are you going to the conference in indiana next year??
I missed this year's conference but I'm saving up for indiana!=]
One thing I learned I do not let the looks get me down in front of them anyway, I really get the cute look on and then will look at them right in the eyes as to say What!!!
Thanks for the friend request! I hope all is well with you. I looked at the support group and its good to know there is one near. Sadly, I dont have a way off of campus in Raleigh, but hopefully this will be a lasting support group that I can be apart of whenever I get a car. Thank you for the information!!!
Lol! I feel the same way sometimes too and I will def come as soon as I get the chance. Thank you for informing me and keeping me up to date in the future.
Hi Sandra! I saw you perform at the conference in Houston and you were absolutely fabulous! I was so inspired by your story and music that I decided to purchase a few of your songs online. You really had such an impact on me.. thank you!!!
As you've probably seen, I posted a date for the National Bald Out next year of July 17. In a few more months, I'll be posting with suggestions and try to get discussions going in various locations. It's really up to everyone wherever they live to plan something if they want. I'm hoping it will continue to grow each year.
Thanks, Sandra. Yes, it was difficult when I first took off the scarf in the center of the dance floor. I'm more self-conscious about the back of my head than the view from the front! Go figure. ( ;-)
Thanks, Sandra...you know, it's strange but I feel LESS self-conscious now as a bald woman than I did for most of my adult life. I was always worried about my appearance, especially when I was younger...always worried what people were thinking. Now I really don't care nearly as much!
Thanks, Sandra! Thanks for accepting! Right now I feel like a poser because I'm wearing wigs. I guess I have to get up the courage to go out without one. The labor to shave my head was really trying and took me a long time to do it. One day, I'll be able to do it. I just wear a hat or hood in the house because my head is always cold! Thank you for the encouraging words. I appreciate them! I hope one day I'll be able to rock as hard as you do! Be blessed!
Thanks for the compliments! As for my eyebrows I pencil them daily....I've done them for so many yrs its second nature too me now lol... but I do have those off days...USUALLY early mornings LOL. Hope u had a good weekend... thanks for accepting my request. Ciao.
Ahhhh!! Thank you some much Sandra. You make me feel so right and I thank you because im so self conscious about my hair. Im now at the point where im gonna cut it but still looking for the courage to go bald. Yours words of inspiration really hit home for me and touched me, like the words that only a mother can give her child :) Thank you again!!
