Profile Information:

Single
About Me:
My name is Mark and I live on the east side of Milwaukee WI. I am 53, single, and never married. Why? I either have not approached enough women in my life because of my condition and or in many cases, my experiences have been that they have been turned off because of it. I have had alopecia totalis, complete body hair loss for about 40 + years. I wore a wig all that time up until about 5 years ago, when I finally threw the last one I had away. So now I wear a baseball cap almost everwhere because I am so used to having something on my head. Anyways, I was downsized from my job some months ago. So I have been spending time checking out the employment web sites. But when I am not doing that I work out at the YMCA about 3 times a week to keep in shape. I also enjoy movies the lake front, at times, the bars, and Milwaukee festivals. Thanks

that's a long time to struggle with it - I know it's tuff for guys also - women can be superficial also - I don't think it's actually sunk in for me really - even after 5 yrs - I don't see myself that way - but still haven't dated since this happened...just too much..idk ..stuff to deal with! anyway, this site is a great forum for us

    Hi Mark,

I'm sad to read about your struggle with this crazy condition. I think it must be worse for a guy because we girls can use makeup and wigs etc. I wish you success in your job search and hope you can meet that special person too.

    Good luck,

    Julia

    Later, marky.

Forgive me if I'm barking up the wrong tree, but are you the Mark Hansen whose letter was printed in the 2/15/10 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel? I did enjoy the letter, and I have a question about one of the quotes.
  • Mark S. Hansen

Hi Aredee. I am heading down to Racine in about an hour and I will be back up here around Thursday afternoon. Yes I am the author of that article in the Monday Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. I am not sure which of the 2 quotes you are refering to. But if it is about the quote of Neil Rosen, after I submitted it, I thought to myself, maybe that was Neil Postman who said that. I usually do my homework more than I did this time. I just read Eugene Kanes article and in a litte fit of emotion just typed out the way I felt at the moment. As far as the first quote goes the one by Newton Minnow, one of the editors called me on Friday night to ask me if the Neil Rosen I was refering to was the current critic, Neil Rosen. I just told him that it is something I thought I remembered from...

Thanks! Please email the info directly when you get the chance. I'm familiar with Minow's "vast wasteland" but Rosen's was a new one for me, and I loved it. I tried searching the Nation's online archive for the full article, but to no avail. And sorry for the unconventional way of contacting you. Blame it on Google.

Hi. As I mentioned, it may have been author and critic Neil Postman (who has since passed away, I think) who said that, not Neil Rosen. If I get the chance I will try to research it.

Hello Mark- I just read your post on Jen's discussion regarding coping with the alopecia. I was surprised to see that you are from Milwaukee; I live in the Madison area and had actually been contacted by a young teen girl in this group during the summer but was thinking we were the only ones from Wisconsin. (I was very sorry to see that you're part of the unemployed population...a hard journey to take; I watch CNN quite a bit, listening to the lack of self-esteem and associated depression from those who face the perpetual rejection. It would be even harder for those of us with AU.)

Many years ago I used to drive into the Waukesha area to meet with the NAAF-associated support group with a subsequent attempt to start one here in Madison but our medical advisor decided to move to the Twin Cities and my job working for the UW Hospital was becoming exhausting with mandatory weekly overtime, Since I worked at home, it allowed me to forgo the wig, a wonderful benefit.

Feel free to contact me at any time; as you'll see in my profile I'm retired so am perhaps spending too much time on the computer but am always glad to hear from fellow alopecians, especially those with universalis. (BTW, I'm originally from Wauwatosa but have not been back to Milwaukee for at least 20 years, usually just visiting my niece in Hartland.) Susan
