I've been gluten free for years -- no grains at all and no sugar, and lots of probiotics. But nothing has changed. (I have had AU for many years) Is there alopecia in your family? They have found that when it starts that young it's usually genetic. My great-uncle had it, but no other family member.
From the research I did on my book "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing," I found no evidence from any researche that this type of alopecia can be cured with diet. Often alopecia will just go away on its own so it seems to be the result of the diet. It can come back later, or never return -- as you said, it is unpredictable. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder and genetics seem to be the major cause. But the power of the mind to heal is great, and If the diet seems to be working for you and others, then that is wonderful and I would continue on that course!
