My son wore hair pieces yes. We couldn't shave his head as everyone suggests because there was no pigment color. Looked like a map. Locks of love created his hairpieces until he no longer needed one. He is now 17. Hope this helped.
All you can do is be supportive of his choice to talk about it or not...sounds like you are a wonderful mom to him. Other options: is there a support group close to you where he could be around others with alopecia? Check on the National Alopecia Areata Foundation web site: www.NAAF.org. When he feels like sharing with friends, there's also a free "school pack" that the NAAF offers which is great for kids to play for their classmates and teachers. Really makes a difference and increases awareness.
