You and your niece might find it good to read some of the blogs and discussions on this site. Also joining the groups and reading comments and discussions in them are really good. I have joined Teenagers with Alopecia and Parents of Children with Alopecia to name a couple.
Bald girls do lunch has alot of info and links on it that you may find useful too.
If your niece joined and wrote or chatted to other teenagers with alopecia it would probably go along way to acceptance as well. Being able to talk to someone who is going through the same sort of issues as you are makes you feel you are not alone.
