Feeling angry

I have been learning to cope with the daily shedding, seeing 1/2 of my head patchy bald, wearing a wig. I cycle between decent days and depression, with tears drying much quicker now that it's been nearly a year since my first patch appeared. But today, I feel ANGRY because I feel LIMITED.

I cannot just tuck my wig hair into a pony tail when the office is warm, or behind my ear. I find my sunglasses bump into my wig making neither sit right. I HATE wearing a scarf during my workouts…

The waiting game

It is really easy for people to say, "It's only your hair" and it's easy for them to laugh about my situation. But it isn't easy for me. This is an entire life adjustment. Not once, could I ever have imagined that one small spot would completely change my life and become three large patches. If I thought I had worries before, well I obviously didn’t think things could get worse. It’s only now that I am beginning to appreciate my silly little life worries more now. Throw them at me; just give…

Update on Devin=)

It's been 2 months since Devin was diagnosed with having alopecia areata. I'm happy to say that his hair has started growing back but it is growing back white. I'm excited as well as anxious to see what the next few months and years will bring. My family has been so supportive and definitely gave me the strength to be a strong mom for Devin. I'm content with what he has and I'm okay either way. He's still too young to fully understand what is going on but every now and then he'll ask if he's…

Monistat 7 for hair growth? What!

Some one told me mixing monistat 7 with olive oil, coconut oil, or castor oil will promote hairgrowth. I googled this and came across an ehow article about this. Has anyone heard of this mixture or have they tried it? For more info search on ehow.com and read the story.

To wig or not to wig

I have had alopecia since I was tweleve years old. I am now 28 and it is a normal part of my life. It is a bit frustrating because it comes in the form of patches all over.I have alopecia areata. Right now I have 9 patches. I have some rather large ones on the sides and the vertex area (learned that terminology from the derm). I can cover it, but I am very self conscious of it when I go out in public becasue one false move will expose my patches and then I have to either come up with a…

Hair regrowth

So...I am just curious if anyone has ever had full regrowth of the hair meaning grew it all back to there previous hair length?? If so how long did it stay? The reason I am curios is I had lost ALL my hair and its been 5 years since I lost it all and now have regrown it back to where it was before any hairloss.

I need some wig advice

Hello my name is Karrie, My boyfriends daughter is 11. She first had bouts with Alopecia at the age of 5. Last October she began losing her hair and lost it all by Christmas. We were all devastated. In the past she would only lose a patch here and there which could be covered by her beautiful long hair. We were forced to get her a flash, and then a full wig. We went with a European wig with real hair that cost us $1600. It was a custom wig, but when we went to pick it up it was too big!!…

Toni Warne - The Voice UK - thanks everyone for the incredible support

Firstly I'd like to congratulate you on this wonderful site. In the past people have mentioned your site to me. I haven't had a lot of time on my hands but I've wanted to have a good look round your site, I have a spare hour this afternoon so I'm going to do that now.

I have had so much incredible support from people. Lots of people have poured out their hearts to me,explaining that Alopecia has taken a hold of not just their hair but their 'whole being' but seeing me perform with no…

Aloe Vera

So, I tried applying aloe vera gel on my scalp last night, and guess what...it doesn't hurt anymore. Usually, I have a lot of tenderness in my crown, since that's where the area that the alopecia seems to be targeting right now...I've been hearing a lot of good things about aloe vera, so I decided to give it a try. I heard that it decreases the inflammation of the scalp, and soothes it. So far, so good. I'm going to get the actual plant to have 100% natural aloe...wish me luck. I haven't…

It's just hair

Its JUST hair. We have all heard this. My personal opinion is YES. It IS just hair. It is not needed for daily life. It serves no purpose other than esthetics. Im talking about the hair on our heads. As someone with alopecia unversalis, I do miss having natural hair protection for my eyes and nose. I also know that after 29 years of alopecia with the loss, regrowth, loss, regrowth never ending cycle; I am much more content not having hair. The lessening of the stress is overwhelming.…

Stepping out with confidence!

Today was the day. I decided to go out without any covering on my head. I stepped out my home with my head held high, got into my car and drove to a department store. I sat in the car a little while and got up the nerve to get out and go in. What a relief! No one gasped or took a double take. Everyone I encountered were very pleasant and cordial. Well, I passed that test. My next test was to pick up my college age daughter and go to shopping (to the mall). The same experience happened at the…

New wig!

...and my first wig. It's a little poofy at the roots at present compared to my natural hair shape. I was told to give it a few days to settle down and then come back to have it thinned if it's still too big. It was REALLY full on top when they first put it on my head-- I looked like an 80's hair band rocker dude, but they thinned it some and used the flat iron, and this is the result. Better than bald patches by a long mile, but I still dearly miss my long hair and just being natural. It…

Grateful

I’m filled so much gratitude right now. The dermatologist just called with my test results. Everything came back normal! At first I was a little disappointed then I was relieved and grateful. I accept that no one is able to give me a definite cause. I’ve also seen my endocrinologist. It’s funny how last Friday I was so anxious and worried that the dermatologist was going to tell me my hair would never grow back. While waiting for those test results this week, I had all sorts of thoughts…

Grumpy n irritated

Call me grumpy but I am extremely irritated with my aa right now as I had to have treatment on my neck today which means lifting up my wig a little so the nurse can get to the right area and I felt so vulnerable, exposed and even embarrassed to some degree. Nothing was said and today I lacked the confidence to be upfront. I'm sure this is because whenever I'm not well my aa bothers me more than usual and I feel miserable and then annoyed with myself for feeling this way. So just getting it off… Continue
