Hi Leon, how are you? I've had alopecia since 10 and have had it for over 3 decades. Just started going to a support group and now started a group of my own - motivational get-together. It's part a motivational/inspirational speak that I give and then it's attendee question/answer/input and social mingling where people share in treatment plans, wig ideas, coping skills, exchange e mails and phone numbers, etc Here is the info for the motivational. Nice if you could make it.

Thanks for the information, Leon. I'll go to Rite Aide and pick it up. I can't tell you the one I have now, but its has several blades and is battery operated (I think that's just a selling ploy though LOL) Take care!

hey leon, i dont know how strong i am but i do know it was a neccessity. actually crown regal was the first person i ever talked to about my hairloss, even after suffering with it for so many years. i was just googling and found her website! i do have some scarring in the back of my head but i still wear my head bald and my chin up. when people stare i just hold my head up high and smile and speak. i just bought the headblade i saw in your pics. how does it work for you? and how often do you use it? do you use the slick?

Maybe one day. I'm only just working up the courage to go out in public bald at all. Yesterday I was walking along the beach and there was no one nearby (apart from a dog) so I took my wig off and walked for a while bald. It was a beautiful day, sunny but with a cold wind and the sky was very blue. I walked along right by the waves coming in. There were a few people quite far away on the promenade but they probably couldn't see me. It was invigorating and I sat and had a good time of prayer as well. I did have a few photos taken of me with no scarf on (for the photoshoot that is on my page). This was done by an artist interested in how women deal with hairloss - but it was indoors. I don't dare post them though!!

What I meant about saving money for the wig was that I couldn't afford to pay for a photoshoot. I do know some friends who are into photography or art so perhaps one of them could do it one day.

What sort of church do you go to?

Gail Porter is a TV presenter/model in the UK who has alopecia. There are some videos of a documentary about her on this site. The UK is an interesting and varied place - I'm sure you'd like it.

I would go for a professional photo shoot but I'm saving my money to buy a decent wig!!

Gail Porter goes out bald here in the UK but then she's a celebrity and probably doesn't have to do stuff like go on buses and go to the supermarket. I can't imagine any place where people wouldn't stare (and that's probably all most people would do) but I think there are some places where I'd actually feel unsafe going out with no hair or looking weird in any way.

I could do with my own personal stylist!! Since losing my hair my old image doesn't seem to work - it was all long hair, long flowing skirts, flowers in the hair etc. Now I just look like a man in a dress. Never been to the US but have got quite interested in it recently. I watched a programme where Stephen Fry (English comedian) went round all the different states in a black cab. It was very interesting. Have you ever been to the UK?

I will try to make some scarves. I am doing an evening class in textiles so will try to do something there. Are people in New York OK about your alopecia? Maybe it would be easier to go around bald somewhere like London than where I live but then there are nasty people everywhere and I'm not sure I'd feel safe. I'll have to try it one day just out of interest.

Hi Leon

Your art sounds interesting. I am interested in art although I've never studied it formally. I like to dabble with sewing. In fact the alopecia has inspired me to make some scarves. I've got plenty of ideas for interesting headwear I'd like to make but lack the time or skill to do so.

I'd quite like to try going out bald but think I'd need to lose a bit of weight first. I feel like my head is out of proportion without hair that it just looks too small for my body. I've only been out bald a few times. The first time was shortly after my hair fell out and I'd only just started wearing a wig. I was walking home from work and found it really hot and uncomfortable and just had to take it off. People were driving past me staring out of their cars in absolute horror. I have been out bald a few times since but I've always walked down the back streets and avoided main roads so people wouldn't see me.
