About Me:
I first encountered AA in 2004 just before turning 49 and in a few months it developed into a full AU. I remember reading all I could find about the subject and pretty much accepting the fact that there is no known cure for this. From what I read I was very optimistic that my hair will come back on its own in a couple of years but still went to see a dermatologist and took Prednisone for a few months before giving up on it. The only person that was envious of my condition was my cyclist son who has to shave his legs every couple of days. In exactly two years all my hair came back as good as ever. There were some stressful events in my life that I ‘blamed’ as the reason for this even though there is no concrete evidence that stress is a trigger for AA.

I enjoyed and really appreciated the hair I got back for about a year than lost some patches and my right eyebrow. It also came back for a year and now I’m on my third ‘tour of duty’ looking like a Marine with my sides and back shaved and a short top. You get lemons, you make lemonade.
The only thing that will make the ‘peach fuzz’ on my right eyebrow look 'normal' is just regular mascara since tinting won’t take hold.

Being divorced for the past two years obviously didn’t help my stress level but I’m determined to simplify my life and live as stress-free as possible. I have great friends who won’t let me stay down for long and two boys I’m really proud of. I started dating a great lady who loves me with or without hair and things are looking up.

After reading some of the blogs here I’m amazed at the courage and strength people are showing despite this unfair ‘gift’ we are all sharing.

I truly believe that in a few years there will be a cure and all of us will come out stronger for the experience. I was reading about a company called ‘Advanced Tissue Science’ that was just scratching the surface of the ‘Stem Cell’ discoveries but unfortunately they folded. I think there is a lot of money to be made for the scientists that will come up with the cure.

Hey Jeffrey,

I actually started 5 years ago having AU at age 49 without any warning or knowledge of the 'club' I'm joining. Didn't have a single hair anywhere on my body.
It took 2 years to start coming back, stayed for a year and then had the Ophiasis pattern, losing just above my ears and r. eyebrow. It all came back within a year but for the past 6 mo. fell out again higher than the ears and also in the back with the same r. eyebrow m.i.a. I shave the sides and back and left a short patch on top to look like a 'marine'. It takes getting used to but it creeps up and I may have to shave it all.

How has it been for you?
