About Me:
Hello everyone! I am a 35 yr old mother of three, beautiful children..I am separated..and I have alopecia. I first experienced alopecia in 2001, when I suffered two losses. First of all, I found out that a good friend of mine had cancer, and didn't have long to live. I begin to care for him, take him to appointments, and watch as his other so-called friends and family disappeared..It hurt me to watch him, and I begin to feel stressed. Next my grandfather died In April. In five months my good friend passed, and I was also in a bad relationship. Anyway, I became very depressed, not wanting to get out of bed...and I was so out of it..I never noticed how the stress was affecting me physically. One day I went to work, and some of the ladies at work kept staring at the back of my head. I knew that they were talking about me, and some of them laughed. I shrugged it off, and kept working. When I went home that evening I took a mirror and looked. I was horrified! I had a huge bald spot forming in the crown of my head. Then I noticed that the hair that used to get in my eyes all the time was gone. I wanted to die! I had been so vain about my hair..and having low self esteem..I honestly felt like hair.was all I had to hold onto. I have struggled since then with hair loss, and stress. I am learning to see my beauty with or without hair, and I won't lie to you..it has been extremely hard. So I am very excited to be apart of this community..because for so long..I felt like i was alone. Now I see that so many are affected...and alopecia is not the end of the world. God Bless everyone who comes to my page.

As the old saying goes "better late than never" First of all, I apologize for taking so long to respond. Tamika, you are a most beautiful Sista with the whole world to look forward too. Keep pushing even though times get tuff. Stay in the race and know the woman dont make the hair... she make the head and yours is perfect, beautiful and blessed. My family and I look forward
to meeting you someday.

I agree that stress has a lot to do with it. We may appear to have it all together but deep down inside we are always worrying about something and it show up in our hair loss.

Glad to talk to you. It's great to speak with people who can relate

Girlfriend...we are all strong women when faced with the unthinkable. Some may think of alopecia as curse, but I see it as something you can draw strength from and see your own true inner beauty, build on it and share your gifts with others. Keep your head held high sister, you are beautiful! :)

I have teenagers as well. I have three boys ages 10, 16, & 17. I have been very open with them about my hair loss. When I shaved it all off in 2006 they thought I was crazy but the accepted it and ask a million and 1 questions all the time. When it started to grow back (every where but the back) I started to wear wigs and even took the oldest with me to pick them out because I knew he would be honest with me.
Believe me I am not that open with everyone. Only the people close to me know the truth but I some one asks I do tell them.

It is really great talking to people who can relate.

Hi Tamika. It's hard to find other people who have the experience we have with hair loss. It is just recently that I have started to tell people about my condition. Now that most of my hair covers the bald spots I don't have to explain as much but most of my coworkers know about it. I find that by talking about it helps them understand and also allows me to feel better about myself. I no longer have to hide. So when they see a bald part showing they dont stare or snicker behind my back. They now tell me or move a piece of hair in place. We should talk about it more so it won't feel as though we are harboring a dirty little secret. God Bless
