1 year wig review
Hello Fellow Alopecians! There is so much info on ordering wigs, however not as much information about the condition of these wigs a few months or a year after they're ordered. I've had cheap indian remy wigs last me two to three years, and some more expensive European hair wigs last less than a year. I'm so curious to know how others' wigs are holding up at the one year mark ... would love to see photos and review of one year old wigs! And please share name of manufacturer, where you ordered, and approx. price point.

Featherlite has the best hair but is super expensive. And the wait times for custom pieces (I bought a stock piece) can be REALLY long ... 6+ months. The owner of Featherlite (who is in Israel now, not Toronto anymore) can also be difficult to work with. But I think price wise, it's similar to Follea and given all the first hand feedback I've gotten on Follea (which I really wanted a year ago when I switched from synthetics to human hair wigs), the Aero wigs, which are the most "affordable" have a lot of returns and poof up top which a lot of people don't like. I can't tell in their pictures though - I always think they look great! But Follea does color their pieces so they oxidize faster and need to be recolored; Featherlite is virgin, unprocessed and won't oxidize nearly as quickly.
Milano hair quality is not great but I love their Freedom caps - the velour lining grips to my short, stubbly hair well and stays secure all day long without any other attachment needed. The Mazali Bliss is similar but the caps run larger or IDK ... even with the adjustments I get from Fortune, I still feel like I need my WiGrip with the Bliss (I prefer the Bliss - the hair is actually better than on the Mazali). And Gemtress ... I like the cap and the hair is decent but I haven't worn it a lot yet (it's my newest piece).
So honestly, I'm still searching for my favorite piece too. Next time I purchase a wig, I'm trying iWig. They have a new cap design that looks promising. I think hair quality will be comparable to Milano based on their prices. A friend of mine just sent me the pictures of the Featherlite cap so I'll upload those later today for those interested in FL wigs :)

I know the thing that we would all love and that is for the hair to just jolly well grow like it's suppose to. I would so love my daughters hair to come back and stay. But in the interim... there is a lot to work out.
Virgin unprocessed hair is rare....really rare and a commodity that most don't understand. It is difficult to source and expensive. There are no people farms....so there is no control over this for the end user or the manufacturer. My view is that this is the only hair that should be used for those with long term extensive hairloss. (Medical hairloss has nothing to do with fashion it is about making sure that those that have lost their hair get a hairpiece that behaves and looks like their hair). Trust me the fashion industry and those making processed hair wigs are not helping the situation...extensions etc. are causing major shortages for ladies who need medical prosthetics for their medical hairloss.
Implanting the hair if it is unprocesssed requires extreme skill and a specialised cap. You don't want return hairs on a unprocessed virgin hair piece as it will tangle. Handknotting is cheap but terribly time consuming (it is often done in India or China in conditions that we probably would not want to work within). Most handtied piece have to be processed in some way so the return hair can be dealt with.... so handtieing using 100% unprocessed virgin human hair is not usually available.
Lace wigs...work for many people but they are fragile and if you used 100% unprocessed virgin human hair the wig base would fail before the hair would...therefore you really need a durable comfortable base that holds the hair securely without damaging it and while giving the most realistic result that can be achieved. For me that is a vapour permeable medical grade silicone freedom cap...my daughter has worn these type of wigs for years and truly doesn't have issues with heat...but menopause (you could be naked and still burning up ). I have done my homework and continue to do so as I'm always wanting to educate myself about what is available and how it will work.
Reasonable price...for me 4 years or more durability from a wig is acceptable. In New Zealand a Freedom Wig (shorter type) is similarly priced as some of the higher priced synthetic and processed hair wigs....you have to take in to account durability and what you really want. You may want to change it up all the time.
I found the perfect wig and I totally believe it works for most who wear it.

I have a client who has severe eczema and has major flare ups throughout the year. She purchased a Freedom Wig from me, and her eczema on her head region disappeared and flares up much less frequently on her head. In fact, she had a major flare up on her face, knees and elbows but the eczema did not return on her head.
I think that because the Freedom Wig is made with medical grade silicone that is hypoallergenic and that you wash the cap out daily with an antibacterial soap this reduces skin flare-ups significantly. You eliminate the build up of oils, bacteria, and minerals that we excrete through our pores daily and instead put on a clean cap every day. (I know that sweating into my kneepads during volleyball would cause my knees to have severe eczema and the effect of disinfecting them in bleach would reduce the rash significantly but don't of course use bleach to wash the cap).
You will of course still sweat during rigourous activity or during a hot and humid day, but because you can wipe out the cap immediately with a cloth and keep yourself dry underneath the Freedom Wig, the eczema and dermatitis will stay at bay. I know for myself, (I have sensitive, freckled skin) I no longer get the red pimply rash that I used to get with my previous lace wig since switching to the Freedom Wig. Also, I LOVE the fact that I don't have to stay in a damp hairpiece for the rest of the day. (It always reminded me of wearing damp underwear…really uncomfortable).
I am extremely active and do long distance running, hiking, biking, beach volleyball in my Freedom Wig and the convenience of the wipe out and dry cap has been both favourable to my skin and for comfort.

I know it works for my daughter who has eczema. The cap acts like a wicking material moving moisture away from your head and out through the cap as vapour. My daughters eczema can be severe, but her freedom wig does not make it worse. I'm afraid...for her life makes it worse.

Andrea: Did u get your Gemtress custom sized or did u order s, m from the company ? Not familiar with cap, except from photos. It's possible to have a wig maker add hair for you where u want it:)

Hi Glowgirl, I got a standard size. The issue is the tangling of the hair, not so much shedding. I am going to try some deep conditioning tips I received from posts within this forum, hoping it'll help. Hair looks good when brushed, however it tangles way too quickly. First photo below is when wig was 6 months old, still good. Now at the 10 month mark it is starting to tangle (last photo below ... a day after washing, and about two hours after brushing through it and leaning back on a couch to read a book). Maybe my expectations are too high, but I really thought I'd get a couple of years out of the piece. Cap is great, see pic below.

Thanks so much Andrea. This wig would really benefit from a bleach bath for maintenance. It will really help revive your wig. It's what wig makers do and you can do it with any type of human hair. Thought I sent you a link previously? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP-jobntUwY
Anyway, go slowly and give it a shot. (You can not go up to the roots in the solution). The silicon mix is great also. Keep us posted!

Yes, got your tip on the bleach bath a few days ago. Just wanted to reply to the comment above. And while nervous to do mix hair and bleach, I will absolutely give it a shot. Will keep you posted. Again, thank you for all the great advice. :)
