Hello Fellow Alopecians! There is so much info on ordering wigs, however not as much information about the condition of these wigs a few months or a year after they're ordered. I've had cheap indian remy wigs last me two to three years, and some more expensive European hair wigs last less than a year. I'm so curious to know how others' wigs are holding up at the one year mark ... would love to see photos and review of one year old wigs! And please share name of manufacturer, where you ordered, and approx. price point.

OMG, I looked at this photo and had instant PTSD from all the human hair pieces I tried that would end up looking just like this: a tangled mess. It is so so frustrating! Thanks for sharing photos though... I'm not that brave. I am still waiting for my custom made GEMTRESS... I hope it does not tangle like this! thanks for sharing Andrea..
Hi
I think I might know why you are getting tangling at the roots. It is probably a hand tied piece you are wearing Andrea, which means there is a return hair....which may be tangling as the wig gets a little older. Oils and sweat may also be contributing to this issue and possibly exacerbating the problem. With handtied pieces the return hair has to be dealt with somehow. Sometimes wig makers cut this off very close to the cap (leaves a prickly feeling if you run your fingers over the cap). Sometimes wigmakers leave the return hair long to try and blend it into the body of the hair (this can be a little fraught as unless it is processed to remove the cuticle tangling will occur). That's one of the reasons that traditionally handtied pieces have issues with processing and tangling. The return hair is difficult to deal with.
I'm not saying that these type of wigs are not going to work for you, but be aware of their limitations as that way you understand what you are buying.
Rose... I hear you with the hot flashes (I don't wear wigs, but my goodness my hair always looks icky after I've had a flush...oh the joys of age lol). A lot of ladies I talk with dealing with menopause and wig wearing do say that with their freedom at least they can take it off and wipe it out quickly cooling them and their heads down. Pop it back on and they still look fab....I look like I've been for a run with limp soggy hair after my hot flush. :( I'm please that your Freedom is mostly working for you though. :)
Rosy
Thanks for all the great suggestions Rosy. I'll keep trying to work with this one ... maybe try the silicone treatments too.
Andrea- Are you blocking your wig for washing it? Pinning it to a head first? That may help. When I saw "sink" I had images of you swirling your hand tied wiggie around:)
Silicon Conditioner really works too.

Also a bleach/ammonia bath can work wonders on a wig that knots.
Instructions are all over youtube. Good Luck with your Gemtress!
Hi Glowgirl, well ... no not swirling my hand tied wig, but yes in the sink gently. I do feel silly though as perhaps I've been doing it all wrong all this time. :( I'm going to give that silicon conditioner a try and hope that helps. In the mean time, keep the posts going on wig reviews, especially the ones that are over 6 months old. I am finding this so informative!
Well, not wrong Andrea, but if you pin wig to a head and wash under bathtub faucet it cannot knot from the washing process. Or have inversion. (hair coming thru the inside of the cap) Hand tied wigs need some extra care.
Dont forget to try a "bleach bath" if the silicon treatment isn't enough. The first time I just did it just for 1 minute I was so nervous. Works with any kind of hair also!
There are many tutorials and here is just one. Wig makers use this technique all the time
I have to agree I love the Freedom Couture wigs, the hair feels lovely, I love the extra bands and clips they use in the caps and the hair smellls lovely when it arrives. I love everything EXCEPT the prices. Of recent I have not been able to justify paying a couple of thousands for a Wig especially when you want to give the wig a break or change your look. I have tried other companies including Gemtress but have not been wowed like the Freedom Couture wigs. A friend of mine said she tried a London brand called Moramode Wigs and they are exactly the same as the Freedom Couture wigs. So as you do I purchased a wig and it’s true the wigs are just as good and I’m happier because I can buy 3 for the price of 1 of the FC wigs. Despite having a recommendation from my friend, before buying the Moramode wigs, I had noticed a lot of women raving about their wigs in a Alopecia group I’m in but hadn’t taken notice of the name as they do wigs for black women and I hadn’t realised I could get a wig for myself too.
