So my 14 year old son has had AA for two years now.  We had to move him from his school to a new school because he was bullied.  The kids in the new school are fantastic, but he has worn his hat every day for the last two years and NEVER takes it off including camping, swimming, etc.  Every year on Mar 16 a group of kids shave their head for pediatric cancer awareness.  My son did not do it last year as he was afraid it would not come back, didn't want to draw attention, and other reasons.  Today we went to the barber and he shaved it all off!  The barber was a pro and took it down to the skin so patches would not show.  My son gets to go to school today and helpfully for a little while after today with out his hat and this is so empowering to him.  He will look like a group of other kids today.

Of course he then realized other kids will have more of a buzz cut, and his is really bare, but I think that's OK.  He is also so nervous about how (if) the good parts will grow back in.  About four months ago he stopped all treatments because he got sick of how it made him feel, and that was great for him... he accepted what would happen.  Now - I see this kid has come so far in the last two years, he is so much stronger, and I am so proud!

Thanks for listening... had to post it somewhere!! :)

props to him.
it's a tough battle and confidence is key. even if he seems like he is ok be aware that his morale is gonna go up and down. it's totally normal. my suggestion for a young that living with alopecia would be to get fit. thats what i did. aesthetically it helps... my 2 cents

Big kudos to your son! We're all on this weird journey with him and it's inspiring to hear how he's handled the challenges at such a young age. Also so glad to hear the kids at his new school are great - I'm sure that makes an enormous difference.
