Hi all!  In April my 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata after I found a bald patch just above the nape of her neck.  At that time I did not notice unusual shedding.  Fast forward a couple weeks after initial diagnosis and I noticed a new, smaller patch on the crown of her head.  Now her hair falling out very rapidly!!  I can't wash, brush, or even gently rub my hand down her hair without a massive amount falling out.  Her Pediatrician ordered fasting blood work and all was fine except she has slightly elevated cholestrol.  He referred us to a Dermatologist who then referred us to Stanford.  We have an appointment next week.  I would say she has more 60-70% hair loss in less than 2 months.  I am so worried!  I am obsessed with finding information.  Any advice or even words of encouragement would be appreciated.

Also seek help from a Naturopath.  They can send in some hair for analysis. This shows if she is low on any minerals, etc.  I have never had a medical doctor suggest this test.  But to me it makes sense.  I know how stressful this is.  Just stay positive for her. Do your research though. I would wait and see what Stanford has to say.  It's always good to share University experiences here too.  It could help someone else. God Bless! Michele

Thank you for your reply.  I have done some reading on Naturopath and I'm intrigued.  I will see what Stanford says on Tuesday and update this post.

Does anyone have suggestions for preventing matting/tangles while she lays on her hair??  (Sleeping, laying on couch, etc)  It is to the middle of her back, but the loose hairs seem to be getting matted with the hairs that have not fallen out.  I'm afraid to even gently comb out her hair.  Should we cut it shorter?

I just have started this journey  with my 8 y old son and I am going through the same thing. I'm curious to know how naturopath has worked for your daughter? I am desperate..on Monday I am going to make appointment to see the pediatrician to get blood work done because I feel that was over looked.

We have not seen a naturopath yet.  My daughters hair got so bad that we decided to shave it off 3 weeks before school (3rd grade).  We are currently applying topical steroids, but I don't think its doing anything.  I have done my best to advocate and support her in any way I can.  She has an amazingly supportive group of friends.  Being the "bald kid" at school actually hasn't been much of an issue.  I think I've come to terms with her hair loss.  I do hope it grows back, but if not, I will love and cherish her just the same.  It is an emotional process.  I actually grieved her hair.  I think allowing myself to feel those emotions helped me deal with it in the long run.  Good luck with your son.  Please let me know how it goes.

My son is now wearing a baseball hat. We have not shaved his head yet although I'm sure that may be soon. We saw his dermatologist and she pointed out an area on his head that is now pitted from injections. I knew that was a risk I guess I was just hopeful we would grow his hair without that happening. I still allowed them to give 5 injections on the top of his head near the crown and I just bought Rogaine I just haven't started the process. I must say I'm still in the grieving process I feel as though he is being punished for something I may of done, yes I know that isnt the truth but I do have the days when I drop him off to school I can't get into the car fast enough to cry and ask God why?...anyways, reading story close to home make me feel not so alone,.

Hi There

My 12 yo son has AA and was diagnosed in June and it's still falling out.  Just FYI we also had blood work and he was on the low end of his thyroid hormone (Grey area) and also had very high cholesterol for his age.  On the bloodwork end of it, we decided to treat with an endocrinologist and he is getting the lowest dose of thyroid hormone.  After three months his cholesterol and thyroid levels are normal.  Unfortunately, his hair is still falling out :(  We have tried  both steroid shots and cremes.  We are going to try one more round of treatment with DCNB here in LA and if that doesnt work or is too irritating we will call it quits with the treatment.  I am now more worried about his mental health than his physical.  He is getting really depressed and we had to pull him out of his school and put him in a small private school.  Kids were monsters! :(  Good luck. It's so hard on the parents.  Feel free to email if you would like more info or support!
