A little about myself… I have Alopecia Areata and Multiple Sclerosis. I am male and 45 years old. I began losing hair in patches when I was 20. My hair and I eyebrows were the main targets. It would slowly grow back but in about 6 months another bald spot would form. I tried everything in the book with Alopecia. The only thing the worked was cortisone injections. But even with that, another bald spot would form elsewhere.

I was diagnosed with MS back in 2011.
I was on Copaxone first. I still had recurrences of Alopecia for the year or so I was on Copaxone. Mind you, I had no expectations it would do anything for Alopecia. My main concern was MS.

When I had my second relapse, my neurologist switched me to Novartis Gilenya. It has so far kept my MS in check, but as a nice side effect it has also kept my Alopecia Areata in check. For the 2 years I have been on Gilenya, I have been free of MS AND Alopecia. Both are autoimmune diseases.

Just my observations.

Just an update... No recurrence of Alopecia (or MS) while on Gilenya.

What type of drug is Gilenya? Do they give it to alopecia patients without ms? Im wondering if it'll work for people with AU.

Gilenya, also called Fingolimod, is a phingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator (whatever that means). It's only given to patients with MS. As far as I know, they don't prescribe it for anything else.
