Alopecia areata increasing in size but small regrowth in middle of each spot?

Hi, i was diagnosed with alopecia areata about 5 - 6 months ago, and have had 3 spots of different sizes on my head. I have had 2 two injections over 2 months. And their is some regrowth in the middle but is very slow, but when this regrowth started appearing the patches seem to start expanding?

Just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of similar situation.

thanks

I think April mays a yr for me with AA. I have those ball spots with that hair in the middle. It grows veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy low. My doctor put me on B-complex , fish oil and evening primrose and of cause a mult vit daily. I am seeing regrow, the spots are closing. In the begaining of AA the spots did spread.
Hi David, I too am going through the same thing...I have been also getting injections now for the last 6 months and I am so very frustrated because although I have regrowth my spots are expanding as well its very weird...I also seem to have some kind of diffuse shedding and I am not sure if it is from injections or not, but it has to be because my shedding was not like that before..Have you had experience with more shedding as well just curious..? It is normal I think for the growth to be in the middle, but not sure if it suppose to expand, but I too am going through the same thing..
Hey trish, yeah im experiencing the exact same thing as you, but ive only had 2 injections over 2 month. I think im going to stop the injections and let nature take the way. I think the injections are causing it to expand and shread but im not certain.
Hi David, Yeah I cant be one hundred percent sure bout the injections causing my diffuse AA aside from my patches, but it seems like it is correlated in some way because my hair did not shed nearly as much as it does now that I am getting more injections..
Be careful with the injections. When I had my first bald spot, about 2" in diameter I went to a doctor who had never treated alopecia. He injected me with a heavy dose of cortizone in that location. So much in each injection that he had to use his thumb to press down the bubbles caused by it. Now? Several months later I am completely bald except for where the doctor injected me. I have a ring of hair in that location, with no hair in the middle and it is growing like crazy. It looks pretty bad. I would say that an experienced dermatologist who gives moderate doses is better. It may not work, but if it doesn't it would be better to be completely bald.

Now, my current doctor, a dermatologist doesn't want to experiment on me. He says that heavy doses of cortizone will make my head look like a raisin. So now I am stuck with what I have. I guess the lesson is to be very careful about who you choose to treat you. Find someone with experience.
Hi Geoff, So would you say it is safe to say that it is possible for the injections to cause diffuse AA?
Hi Trish, not sure. What I think is that the timing of the injections with respect to the stages of alopecia might be important. An area that has been under attack for a long time may respond differently than an area that has been under attack for a short period of time. Possibly an area that has not been under attack could be protected by an injection. What I am saying is that injections might not be a cure, but more of a prevention, depending on the stages of hair follicle malfunction.

This might sound really weird, but I had a dream this morning that told me what the cause was. It had to do with the gravitational pull of the moon. Certainly, the moon causes tides in our oceans, and has been blamed for people behaving erratically, etc. The moon does have a gravitational effect on our bodies. I think that we are somehow evolved to create a balance within our bodies that counterbalances that effect, even if it is not something that could be measured very easily. I think that my body lost the ability to create that counterbalance, and the end result of my energy fields going haywire was my immune disorder. At the time I started losing my hair I was under an incredible amount of stress, and honestly was depressed as well. Anyway, I think that it was a rare and unique combination of factors that caused my alopecia. No way to test my hypothesis. Like I said, it was a weird dream. Maybe that's all it was.

Sorry about your hair, Trish. However, you still have a lot going for you.

Geoff
Let me try again to answer your question. I do not think that injections cause diffuse AA. If your hair is falling out in large quantities from all over your head when you comb your hair or run your fingers through your hair then you are going to be bald soon. That is exactly what happened to me over a period of several months.

If that is the case then injections may not be a good idea because you could wind up with a bizarre looking head. Hair in a few places that is growing like crazy, but smooth everywhere else. Shaving doesn't help me much because my hair is dark. So I have a really weird looking head. Hopefully it will grow back. Last resort is lazer hair removal in the location of the second injection. I won't do that now, because with my luck the hair on the rest of my head would probably start growing back and I would wind up with my original bald spot, except permanent.

Have a nice evening.
My derm said that if someone is older with AT or AU for a long time, even injections would probably not work any more.
Hi Geoff, I can run my fingers and brush my hair and hair is continuing to fall out and it has yet to stop and I do believe that it is from the injections..I do think that this month will be the last month of injections..Before I had gotten injections my hair did not shed nearly as much as it does now..I too was under an extreme amount of stress when my AA started and it was nearly overnight balding...My hair is continuing to grow back in the patches, but it is now very very thin and looks like a the width of a pencil now in a ponytail...I am scared of losing all of my hair, but like i said the patches are getting better but the hair is diffuse now...Thank you for your information and opinion..
