Hey folks, first discussion from a newbie :)
I'm not sure if this has been brought up numerous times, as I've yet to check out all the discussion threads, but I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a correlation between one's health, and the fact that they have alopecia? I ask because for all of my life, I've only had the chicken pox, and one cold that I had years ago. Otherwise, I've never had to visit a doctor or miss any days from a sickness.
Any input would be appreciated!

I don't think so... just based on my own experience. I've always been a super health nut - working out every day and eating healthy healthy foods. I still had isseus with my health. And then along came AU - no amount of proper diet, supplements, regular exercise etc. could stop hair loss. I still have AU and I have other health issues too. I've had shingles recently and a variety of other issues some of which are immune related. I rarely had colds until I had children - now my colds last from Sept to June! I don't think alopecia eliminates other illnesses. I also, having followed such a strict diet experimenting with veganism, gluten free, etc. for years - way before it became well known - don't think diet is related to alopecia.
My alopecia started over 20 years ago at age 15, after a three week bout with Scarlet fever, and I've noticed myself being healthier after,oh about age 20 or so. I've had the flu twice since 1998, bronchitis in 2000 (only cause I worked in a gas station so I was surrounded)and a couple headcolds is about it.
Maybe the fact that it hits when you're younger makes a difference. If you compared a 25 year old with and without alopecia they might both be as healthy but the person with alopecia might be thinking more about their general health so they might think they're healthier..does that make sense? Although I don't get sick much either so could be something in it. I have mild asthma and eczema too.
Thanks so much for the replies folks!
Being pretty much healthy all my life, and being bald also, I was wondered if the two were related, especially since I lead what many would consider an unhealthy lifestyle (what young person doesn't lead one eh?). With some people here saying that those with alopecia are also affected by other disorders, I'm willing to believe maybe it's just in the genes (and a healthy lifestyle of course ; ) )
I've got AU all I can say is I didn't get sinus infections as often as before. *shrug*
Had to learn to take care around certain environments and use a rinse when I felt one coming on.
BTW, thanks Ryan,lol.........I posted my response a couple days ago and lo and behold I woke up with the flu this morning.........you jinxed me,lol........
I've also been thinking about this. I have a few other health issues which include, Epilepsy, Asthma, and Eczema. My mom said I was a generally healthy kid, not too many colds or flu. My hair has started falling out again the past month or so and since then I've had no energy, been really tired and have been home with the flu the past few days. Anyone else experience this?

I've thought about the stress of my hair falling out being a factor and also the lack of natural sunlight as winter is setting in. Any thoughts?

Did you have your Thyroid checked this is directed to AMY

Yes. I have my Thyroid checked regularly and never find anything.

The funny thing is I started losing my hair when I began my career as a teacher. I don't know if the stress from work triggered it or what.

Too funny Amy I used to be a teacher and I had to quit because of the stress.   I had constant pain in my stomach and stress headaches.  No hair loss during that time, so I'm not sure if its the cause of the Alopecia.  I have a Thyroid problem and it went out of control this time so I think thats what triggered it.  Hope you find a solution.
