Hi
My daughter is 6 and she has Alopecia Areata since she was a baby. Those damn round patches covered her head at 9 months old and now she is 6.5. She has lost her hair twice completely and and it has grown back, she always has a thin layer of white hair underneath. At the moment she has a lovely head of hair and it is the longest it's been.
But those damn patches started again. This time round it will have much more of an impact on her emotionally than when she was a baby, and I am worried. She is a happy outgoing child not scared of anything. But she loves to be a princess and have long hair. When her hair was shorter she would put scarves and towels on her head and pretend it is hair.
I am open with her and I do not pretend things will be ok, I say it as it is. She knows she has Alopecia and she knows full well that her may all fall out again. She has two large patches and a couple of smaller ones.
One huge problem at the moment is that at the moment she has head lice from school, I have to do the combing, but it is pulling lots of her hair out and I hate this. I feel sick when I am doing it, but I have to get rid of the lice.
I am about to embark on an alternative therapy with Shmuel Gonen Hair up. It says his product is meant to stop the hair loss but I have my reservations.
Hey ho, her we go, again.

Hi
I can relate to what you are going through. Being Mum, means taking the responsibility and care for our children...sometimes with alopecia it can be a very challenging condition to manage.
I think you are a fantastic mum doing the best you can to help your daughter with this condition. You are the one person that knows her and understands where her needs are at the moment. It's always a changing target as they grow.
Lice are an absolute annoyance but be assured that I don't believe they or any treatment you are using to control them will make a difference to alopecia...that does what it wants when it wants.
I have heard of Hair-up. I would be a careful and thoughtful around the decision to use a treatment, as you already know your daughter's hair comes and goes of it's own accord (this is very normal for children with alopecia). I know that 'Hair-up' has anecdotal evidence to say it works...but really this could just be natural remission. I would be wary of paying money for something that is not scientifically proven. There are procedures and processes around treatments that really should be adhered to. Check and see what Hair up claims...if it looks too good to be true - I really would be wary.
My experience with my daughter is that she has lost and regrown hair 6 times in the last 10 years...we have never used medication or treatments, but her hair continues to come and go...this really is not unusual with alopecia.
Good luck with everything and feel assured if your decision is to try the hair-up treatment you have my full support.
Hugs
Rosy
Hi
Thanks for the reply.
I have had my reservations about the hair up treatment, and I more than have my doubts, but I am willing to try. I am know a lot of people in Israel, have family there, and have asked a couple of my family memebers, who are also alternative health practitioners who say they have heard he has a good reputation.....i will lose a bit of money if it doesn't work, but hey ho. I will give it 6 months.
Thanks for the message
Thanks again
Michelle
I can sympathize with what you are going through. My daughter who will be 7 next month started this year with no hair. She had beautiful long blonde hair down to her waist at Thanksgiving and was completely bald within a month. Girls this age do like to dress up and play princess. My daughter is no exception. I was really worried about how all of it would impact her. She actually took it better than I did. We still play dress up. One thing she loves to do is wear tattoos on her head. She gets a lot of attention and loves it. We also play with scarves. She loves to tie scarves up and says she is a gypsy. Hats, headbands, play wigs. She still dresses up, we just do it in a different way. Friends love to come to our house to play dress up because we have so many neat scarves, hats, and wigs. We have a wig from Hair Club for Kids she can wear if she wants to have long hair. She said the other day she liked the fact she can change her looks.
Be careful on the products. I would ask a dermatologist about any before giving them a try.
There are a lot of scams out there, unfortunately.
My daughter used Luxiq its a mousse. You can google about it. It was prescribed by her dermatologist when she was 5 years old. It worked,,,,,,,,,,,,,no more alopecia.
Good Luck!
Hi,
I am new to alopecia world and I was just reading what you wrote and you just took me back to my childhood and hope you don't mind me sharing.
I was 6 when I got Alopecia and my parents tried to do everything they could to get my hair back. It actually came after my first treatment with nits don't know why but then from specialist, ultraviolet, to herbs to onions, garlic you name it I tried it but no injections, my parents would not let me.
Then the specialist told my parents after 3 years of ultraviolet light when I was 9 to plan for a bald daughter and to look for a wig as there was no way my hair would grow back.
My parents then took me overseas where they heard about this naturopath and his success stories that grew other peoples hair.
Well perfect got my hair back was there for 3 1/2 months my hair all back. I was so happy then I came home back to Australia. In a couple of weeks it all fell out again I had the remedy but I think our climate might have something to do with it, not sure but it just would not work at all.
Then I was nearly 13 years old someone told mum to try another remedy. Why not, you just never know if you don't try, it was really easy to use and natural. First came out the white hairs (I call them the sick hairs), then once they fall out my hair was back. I have had my hair back over 31 years now and it is my time to give back if anyone wants to try.
If it worked for me it might help your daughter or anyone else.
If you are interested let me know.
Dear Angelia,
My 10 years-old daughter is suffering alopecia the third time. We've tried so many things but her hair has not come back. I'm very curious to know the remedy you had, could you please share with me? Thanks so much!!
I understand it can get very stressful but don't let your daughter see that side. Always be happy around her and she will accept it either way.
I had another person try it as he started with alopecia on his beard and could never grow one. Once he tried it he grew his full beard and was over the moon.
I had never met anyone with alopecia in my lifetime except him, until now on Alopecia world. If I can help you and anyone else that would mean the world to me.
It is easy get yourself olive oil it has to be 100% pure then go to your hardware store and buy a piece of copper pipe (it must be copper).
Then in a bowl place your copper and pour in your oil to cover the copper. Now put it away in a cupboard in a dry cool place not under stove. Leave it until the oil turns green takes approx 30 days.
When it has turned green apply it to her bald areas, her hair will get oily but leave it on as long as you can before washing out.
I use to leave it on weekends all day and slept with it. During school days mum use to put it on as soon as I arrived home and washed it out either before I went to bed or in the morning.
Firstly she will grow white fine hairs which is a good sign then they will fall out and the new hair will start growing. It took me about 3 months to grow my hair back and have never looked back.
Good luck I hope she has the same luck and success that I had. I would love you to keep in touch and let me know how she goes.
Thanks Angelia. Could you let also me know if you had just a few of round hairless patches on the scalp, or you were completely bald?
Hello,
it has been a while, since you wrote this. Have you tried what Angelina suggested (olive oil with copper)? If yes, did it help?
Thanks
Sipi
