Hey all !

A beneficial thing in the process of losing my hair has been engaging in introspection.

Specifically about how masochistic we can get with this disorder.

I'm talking about the energy consumed in the obsessive checking of the state of our follicles, even though we know very well that it's only fueling the idee fixe and overdramatizing the situation.

Don't you feel it can be verging on OCD sometimes ? (yeah, let's add disorder to the disorder... :-) )

From my personal experience, I feel that I get more worried about alopecia whenever my twisted mind wants to avoid to face something that should be a priority for me, at the very moment.

As if alopecia was a convenient, comforting excuse to step into a breach it is opening.

Then I was wondering how many of you were affected by this and how you overcame the obsession.

Hello Mr. Crumpets, I love your post and your wacky sense of humour which clearly comes naturally to you. If you think that you may be developing mental illness that's a healthy sign that you are an aware person in control. Most of the population suffers from some sort of mental illness (but believe themselves fine) as life takes us all on an emotional roller coaster. We all constantly and regularly slip out of sync. That's normal. As you rightly say how we deal with it, if at all, is key.

First let me say that you wouldn't be normal if losing your hair didn't cause shock, followed by a regular checking process. You are responding normally. Rest assured.

Life constantly presents all of us with character tests, and arguably the more 'developed' we are the bigger our tests become. Whilst I'm not a phrenologist I do believe that one's face reflects character. Take a look at the photos. of most of the women on this site. Most are advanced beings, often with angelic features. Imagination? Take a look and form your own opinion.

The tests we face are always extremely difficult to dodge, and baldness is a classic example of this. Furthermore it's not like having a vehicle with a broken gasket, the challenge being to replace it. Baldness frustrates the hell out of everyone as largely there is nothing to be done other than 'wait and see.'

Which leads me to your point, namely that you feel that your wait and see is going overboard. It is, but as said before - it's to be expected at first.

The answer is to be be patient with yourself. Don't expect that you should behave this way or that way. Go with your emotions and natural inclinations, but maybe say to yourself 'I'm only going to check my hair say two or three times a day.'

Never say 'I'm not' as our sub-conscious rejects negative words and tries to process the remainder of out instruction! Always give yourself positive messages.

I keep trying to walk away from this site. I don't need it. But possibly I do. It's nice to try and help.
