Anyone have obsessive compulsive personality disorder along with alopecia?

Just a question about obsessive compulsive disorder with alopecia? I found out at age 40 something I suffered from OCPD. I always knew I tried to be perfect!! Then when I lost all my hair at age 24 I knew it was going to be difficult to live up to my standards! I know we can't be perfect but I always give 100 percent! I feel now I can never be 100 percent in my eyes! So every other aspect of my life I try to control! Anyone else feel like that too?

Hi

I have met many people with Alopecia and I wouldn't say they are prone to this disorder anymore than the general public. I have noticed over the years that many with alopecia are also very high achievers (not all, but a good percentage).

I feel the lack of control around your hair and the way you want to present does motivate people to work on what they can control...so maybe that is a very normal response.

Thanks for your response! I hope I'm not alone in this! I think my OCPD may stem from losing my dad to cancer when I was 11! It devastated me and I have been over achiever my whole life and try to please everyone!

I just plain have OCD.  Wash wash wash.....all the time....it sucks....but in a lot of respects, I feel I am more "right" than others in this world.  Nothing wrong with being clean, having clean hands before you eat, clean clothes, clean house....on and on......

Lexi,
Right on! Weird now that I don't have any hair I can't stand to see hair anywhere in my house! Like the bathroom! I freak out when my husband leaves a little when he shaves! He's so considerate though he tries to keep it clean for me!

To the best of my knowledge there is no connection between Alopecia and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  OCD is a chemical imbalance and is not connected to 'being in control'.  OCD presents more of a 'hiccup' in the brain and obsessions(thoughts) and compulsions(acts to deter the thoughts) are not connected to any logical thought process.  This serious mental health concern has nothing to do with Alopecia.

Now Alopecia does cause significant psychological distress...hard to cope etc as we all know.

FYI, I am a clinical social worker with AU....

Hi Michelle, I understand! I was just curious if others with alopecia experienced OCD OR OCPD? Thank you for responding! How are you coping with hairless?
