Hi
I have met many people with Alopecia and I wouldn't say they are prone to this disorder anymore than the general public. I have noticed over the years that many with alopecia are also very high achievers (not all, but a good percentage).
I feel the lack of control around your hair and the way you want to present does motivate people to work on what they can control...so maybe that is a very normal response.

I just plain have OCD. Wash wash wash.....all the time....it sucks....but in a lot of respects, I feel I am more "right" than others in this world. Nothing wrong with being clean, having clean hands before you eat, clean clothes, clean house....on and on......
To the best of my knowledge there is no connection between Alopecia and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. OCD is a chemical imbalance and is not connected to 'being in control'. OCD presents more of a 'hiccup' in the brain and obsessions(thoughts) and compulsions(acts to deter the thoughts) are not connected to any logical thought process. This serious mental health concern has nothing to do with Alopecia.
Now Alopecia does cause significant psychological distress...hard to cope etc as we all know.
FYI, I am a clinical social worker with AU....
