Can AA turn into scarring alopecia over time?

Well the title pretty much sums it up. Im worried because I've had alopecia areata all my life, but for a year now i've lost pretty much all my hair, and the remains are not like always have been in the sense that they are kind of diffuse, like stand alone hairs (not patchy), and sometimes i notice swelling of my scalp.
