Hi I'm new here and just recently became fully bald
For the last 3 months! I became de welt depressed
But finally went to drs 2 weeks ago! She came in with a
Stack of papers from computer. I have already researched
All reasons and types of hairloss! Well I had a hat on
And she didn't ask to see my scalp I took it off and broke
Down for the first time,I think it was relief cuz I thought
All my worrying was gonna be over! She looked at me and turned
Back to computer real fast!! Like she couldn't look at me?!?!
She didn't ask any medical questions and started talking
Bout my depression, prescribed me anti-depressant and something
For my anxiety! Told me she would refer me to a dermatologist
Which I will be going on 28th! My question is...I know alopecia can show up
On perfectly healthy people, but are some cases caused by
Other health issues? I don't feel healthy ever and have been
Losing weight crazy!! Should she be checking my thyroid
Or other things?? Or should I just let derm fix it?
Anyone have any answers?? Thanks in advance for any help!!

Definitely get your thyroid checked. I would think the weightloss and hairloss together is the main indication of that, and your doctor should check that out before prescribing anti-depressants.
I'm sorry this has been your experience. There's a lot of support on here, and my hope is that you find a doctor who guides you with many options, not just one.

The latest research (See Discussions on Research and Publications) says there are gene markers for alopecia, which may mean we have been prone to it since birth and only certain unknown-as-yet circumstances, proteins, bacteria or environmental pollutants activate it. Hormone may also be connected, but that remains to be seen with research. A dermatologist who is an expert in alopecia would be your best bet for information and choices.

Genes found for alopecia areata, a kind of hair loss

June 30, 2010 | 7:18 pmAfter a scanning the human genome for tiny DNA differences, researchers say they've uncovered clues to several genes involved in alopecia areata, in which patches of hair -- or all hair -- are lost from the scalp or full body.

Yes, yes, we hear you yawn, another day, another whole-genome scan, reporting genes-linked-to-something-we-already-knew-had-a-heritable-component. But to find out… Continue

Hi Gina, I'm sorry to hear about what you are going through. May I suggest with your other symptoms that you also get checked for Celiac Disease. I too was looking weight and my doctors kept telling me it was stress related since I lost my Son to the war in Afghanistan last year. It took 14 months of losing weight to finally find out I have Celiac Disease which is an intolerance to gluten found in wheat, barley and rye. It attacks the villi in your small intestine killing off the villi. In my case this led to malnutrition because of the damamged villi which cased me to lose weight. Make sure they do the specific IgA and IgG blood tests. From there they will want to do an endoscopy to verify that you have Celiac. I am also losing my hair and I believe for the most part due to malnutrition but no one knows for sure why. We are here, welcome. :)
