Hi there!
The reason I'm asking this question is because I started to have light pitting in my fingernails that come and go since around 19 (I'm 21 now) and my mother has AU since her early 30s. However, she's the only one in her family with the condition. I know that there is a link between the two and I'm really afraid that I might get it :(

My fingernails were not just pitting, they were actually shredding, but none of that started until I was AU for several months. I am on xeljanz now and my nails are healing and becoming stronger as they grow out even though my hair is not yet growing in. I have been on other medications that have helped my alopecia. I had to stop because of side effects and every time my hair falls out before my nails are noticeably effected. I hope this helps. Good luck my dear.
I only developed pitting in my nails after I got AA which then progressed into AT. I have no-one in my family who has AA except me. Before that my nails where normal. My dr. tried to tell me it was a fungi infection and that my nails were like that due to trauma i,e; I scratch them etc at the bottom off the nail shaft when I am stressed but I don't realise this. However, through this site I know he is talking rubbish and it is because off my AT.
