I'm at the stage where I lost over 60% of my hair, and until last week, I have been able to cover it up by the hair thats left. I have been dealing with AA for the last 5 months, so I'm still pretty new in this new chapter in my life.
I found this website a few days ago, and for the first time, I dont feel alone anymore, and that's very comforting. I have been pretty strong so far, but I'm starting to feel more sad for each day. I know that I need to take the decision about either shaving my hair, or see my head slowly go bald. I'm scared.
I'm from Sweden, and 1,5 year ago I moved to the States to marry the love of my life. I went from a beautiful bride to a stuggeling half bald scard little girl. It's been really hard. My question to you guys is, does the cortisone injections works?
I have been taking them once a month the last 3 months, and I do have some hair growth on some places. In Sweden they dont believe in it, and only few places in Sweden offers it. In the States, my doctor seems to belive that it actually helps.
Anyone has any experience you guys can share? I dont want to keep taking the shots and spending all those Money for nothing... and i dont want to get my hopes up either.
Thank you so much for your time!

Hello Malin
I am so sorry that this is happening to you ...especially as you are so far from home. I hope your husband is being supportive and caring as you need him at this time to help you navigate through all the information that you will work through with this condition.
The short answer about Cortisone injections is that sometimes they work. They are a steroid and it has been shown the prednisone and other steroid medications will bring back your hair...but there is a very big downside to this type of medication. You can not use steroids indefinitely as they are very harmful. Often steroids will being your hair back but as soon as you stop taking them your hair will fall out once again...unless your alopecia is going into a natural remission. Which happens often with people who have alopecia areata.
There is a reason that this type of medication is not being offered in your home country....it doesn't work very well and your medical people do not want to offer something that can have some serious ramifications for your ongoing health.
If I can be of any assistance to you around any information or support feel free to friend me.
Take care
Rosy
Please try Paleo Autoimmune protocol. It is hard but it works - many people have remission of their autoimmune diseases on the protocol.
Here in Canada doctors do believe in the cotisone injections. They use them regularly in the treatment of AA. You are referred to a dermatologist who is skilled in administering the medication and deciding what dosage is best. My son received three treatments, a few months apart on a particularly stubborn spot of AA.....the hair did grow back in that spot and there were no adverse side effects.
I have gotten 4 rounds of injections. 1 round every 3 weeks. After the 2 and round I had significant regrowth. After the 4 the round the right side of my head has all grown back and most of the left side. The top and the back are growing in but not as fast. And in a 6 month time ( which is how long it took to start the injections) I had lost 95% of my hair. Every treatment works different for different people. Good luck
