Hi Laura! I am wondering...have you heard anything from the Dr Phil show with your request?
Thanks,
Lisa :)
Does anyone know when the airing of this show is on? Thanks!!
The problem I have with Dr. Phil and alopecia is this statement "the most well-known mental health professional in the world." He's a mental health 'expert' (ahem). So, is he planning to spin that alopecia is some kind of mental health related problem or is in some way psychosomatic? Is he planning to bring an alopecia specialist onto the show? If this episode topic were being suggested for 'The Doctors', I might be more okay with it. But, Dr. Phil's specialty is not in line with this topic. Based entirely on how Dr. Phil might choose to spin this topic (i.e., mental health related), I think I'd steer clear of this one.
That is, unless he plans to delve into the emotional conditions that people face by having alopecia. That could be an okay topic to explore. But, would you be willing to get on there and talk about depression (and other insecurities) because of your alopecia?
I agree with you about what Dr. Phil & his show has become. It's unfortunate because, with his wide audience, he could do wonders for educating the public.
I BELIEVE this show WILL help educate the public!! I will focus on the GOOD aspects of it....not the negative. :) PEACE!!
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Phil. His show is much more sensationalized than it used to be, but so many people watch it. This could be a great way to get information about Alopecia into the light; it all depends on what angle he decides to take.
I think most of us can agree that if more people knew about Alopecia life would be a little easier. While this is not the right place for my 9 year old daughter to tell her story (she's a sweet shy girl) I applaud those are willing to carry the banner. Thank you for sharing your experiences and EDUCATING viewers on the FACTS about Alopecia.
Could you please let us know when the show will air?
I feel the same way about my 9 year old granddaughter. I'm afraid this could all go awry very easily, if they choose to showcase ONLY those folks who are distraught coping with alopecia, rather than present an informative & balanced picture. It would be great if a NAAF spokesman was on this episode...
God bless your sweet little 9 yr old! I have been living with this since I was 5 yrs old. I say...we focus on the good this show can bring about but I do understand it may not be the right thing for your little girl. I am blessed to see the publicity about this because decades ago when I developed this anomaly, there was no support of any kind out there! I survived....somehow!!! :)
My name is Cyan and I am 21 years old. I was diagnosed with Alopecia when I was 15 going on 16. What started as a quarter-sized bald spot, progress and spread like a wildfire, and within 3 months I was completely bald. Growing up I was already EXTREMELY insecure; which was a result of being bullied CONSTANTLY for everything. Whether it be my style, my voice, my hair (ironically), my shoes, my face, my body. I was ridiculed every single day at school. This all caused me to become depressed at a young age. I am not sure if depression or anxiety played a roll in the loss of my hair, but I wouldn't doubt it. Anyways, as soon as my Alopecia worsened, my depression became much more intense and serious. It was so bad that I BARELY left the house for 2 years. I absolutely hated myself and thought God was punishing me for whatever reason. Fast forward to now, I have definitely grown and I now function like a normal person. However, the psychological damage of isolation and self-hatred leaves a scar. I want nothing more than to raise awareness for my ailment and to find a way to accept my condition. I write poetry and am working on publishing a book because I now see the world differently. I want to let other people with Alopecia know they are not alone. Alopecia needs much more acknowledgment, and society must change their views on beauty.
Cyan, thank you for sharing your story!! I am SO pleased to hear that you have evolved into a stronger person! I encourage you to live in the moment and try to let go of the past negative experiences! I am 61, I have lived with alopecia since I was 5 yrs old and am still presently learning to "create my happy"! I know that staying stuck in the past is not a good place for me to be! I have to live in the moment and move forward to what lies ahead! GREAT for you on writing a book! It sounds like you are on the right path!! Think good thoughts! They create your reality!!! Love and Peace!!! :)
