Hi PK1981

From what I understand about alopecia, dying your hair or not dying it will not cause hairloss or hairgrowth.  I would check with your doctor though and ask if combining the injections with dyes could cause any issues.

thanks for reply ya i asked my dermo they said i could dye it but no bleach ... but i read that hair dye could also cause alopecia very confused but since i already have alopecia i hope if i do it it doesn't get worse : / i think im gonna put it off for now

I get pain sometimes, near loss spots.  Feels like a very bad sunburn.

I'm 44 and have had AA for almost 3 years now. I have below my shoulder length hair and the AA started with one small spot that grew to the size of a lemon, got injections, grew back. I was able to hide the spot easily so never got too crazy.

One year later almost to the day, new spot showed up, then another...had about 10 total of various sizes. Got injections and hair stopped falling out and I had regrowth all summer. Now I just noticed 3 new spots :(

I have highlighted and colored my grey hair since my 30's and my AA didn't stop me from doing it. I will be honest, I think that the whole coloring process does aggravate my AA (foils, dye, sitting under the dryer). I feel scalp tingling and tightness afterwards and have had new spots show up a few days/week after getting my hair done. But I've also had new spots show up other times and went months without new spots and I get my hair highlighted every 6 weeks.

So why do I continue you might ask? I didn't want to stop living. I read countless things online about AA and yes, I read that hair dye can cause it...along with stress and a bunch of other stuff.

I wanted to live my life as I always have, I didn't want to let AA change my life, so I continued doing what I always did and coloring my hair is one of those things. I get my injections, keep my hair long, I use cream eye shadow to help conceal the spots and I pray for days without wind.

My head looks patchy and I call them my polka dots...so many spots (I'm up to 13) with various lengths of hair growth plus my new completely bald spots...but I'm grateful for each hair that has grown and try very hard not to let AA control me. Some days easier said than done :)

Make the choice that's best for you but I did want to share my story so that it gives you another perspective :)

thank u soo much for your reply it sounds a lot like my case i have about 10 spots some huge some the size of a quarter been getting injections every 3-4 weeks a lot of hair has grown but its very patchy like as u described kinda like a soccer ball lol .. i used to get my hair dyed for years too i haven't done it since AA started my hair is growing in some spots pure white its weird .. Do you think new spots will show up regardless of dying it or not ?? i agree with you about not about not changing life because of this disease .. Thank you for sharing your story with me and the great advise the eye shadow is a good idea i gotta try that .. also one more question when i put my hands thru my hair my hair keeps coming out even with injections did u find injections made it stop coming out or just makes it grow back in the spots i see growth but at the same time its coming out esp after i use conditioner in the shower ... ty again
