I know the gluten arguement comes up time and time again but I encourage eveyone to watch this video featureing Dr. Tom O'Leary. You may think you are gluten free and not be (gluten is hidden in so many foods. And, despite giving up gluten, the quinoa and other grains that you are eating may also invoke an allergic response causing hair loss.

Just because the gluten is removed, doesn't mean that the digestive system, the root of autoimmunity problems, has been healed. Leaky gut is one of the most common causes of autoimmunity and also one of the most challenging things to heal

Below is a link to a diet that can help alleveiate leaky gut:

I have been almost 100% gluten free for 3 months and my body hair is reappearing, but it is so important to be 100% free, as Dr. O'Leary explains. I am starting the SCD diet and will report back as I go through the diet.

Thanks for the info. :)

Thank you so much for posting this. That was definitely eye opening and educational! I have been GF but with an occasional bite of cake or something and communion at church. Holy cow! That's so hard to believe.

Oops - the MD's name is Dr. Tom O'Bryan (not O'Leary)

Hey Chris,

Was just wondering how the diet is going? I've been looking into the scd diet but haven't committed to it yet. Was hoping to get some feedback from your experience thus far.

Hi Tom,
I have had one setback but I think it is due to stress (I just wrote an acupuncture board exam), but I am finding that my hair is gradually reappearing, almost in the reverse order in which it left my body (ie: body hair returning first). I have a lot of body hair now, eyebrows are starting to reappear and I have clumps of white hair growing on my head at different rates. Still a couple of patches on my head without any hair and no sign of eyelashes yet. I have been committed to the diet for probably three months so following the diet is getting easier. If you have any type of digestive disorder, I would definitely try the SCD - you have nothing to lose :) Autoimmunity is usually caused by some disorder in the digestive system.

I agree with you. I have hope that science can back this up with proper research that no doubt big pharm companies won't fund. But we all know, that something has caused this to happen and that it can be reversed.
What does SCD stand for?
I'd like to join in for my own sake.

Good luck and let me know how things progress

Are you AA or AU?

I found my AA on my head a year ago. It has never stopped enlarging and I've lost at least 1/3 of my hair though I have white regrowth in much of that third. Regrowth has come back in order of loss so far. I now see liney gaps in an eyebrow that are becoming more evident without me having to question, "is it missing" anymore. It is definitely missing. My armpit has an area that has enlarged from a bare coin size spot to a much larger area that is now growing in pure white as well. Though I have not lost it all, I seem to be losing it universally and the loss continues. This past year has been an awful struggle, going from normal dark brown long to my mid back hair, to finding 2 small spots that have merged and taken over an alarming amount of territory. Not stopping...so sad.

google leaky gut diet and give it a try

I cut out even more than gluten about 4 months ago. All grains and white foods like potato and rice and milk. Increased my greens and began making smoothies with kale as a main ingredient, brussels sprouts, chia seeds, almond and coconut milks. It is only within the last 2 weeks I've had a bit of bread in the form of crumpets mainly because I am such a light-weight. I've managed to gain back about 5 of the 20 pounds I lost due to being depressed over the shocking hairloss and the ensuing depression over being so thin and looking poorly.

Editing to add that I really looked very nice just before I found the HL. Having been very thin my entire life, I'd put on a few pounds and was liking my pleasingly plump look which don't laugh was still under 110.

Really be careful with the grains - they play havoc with our digestive system.

by the way have you ever had any digestive disorders?

The most I've had as far as grains go is a crumpet now and then with almond butter and I've also had oatmeal. I've really not had any digestive issues but I feel that I have a candida problem. Ever since the birth of my last child 8 years ago, I have had a sore tongue after eating sugar or cereals. When I restructured my diet to exclude grains and sugars and began to drink fresh organic squeezed lemon in water in the morning, by the next night, my tongue was PERFECT for the first time in 8 years. I just felt it feel different and ran to the mirror to check. I was shocked. Never expected to have that happen.
