Hi,I am new here and am looking for some guidance.I have had alopecia for three and a half to four years now, caused by a stress reaction to my poor health.Although the hair loss was very hard for me,I had no problem showing off my baldness as my husband and friends were very supportive(It was actually kind of liberating for me,and having no hair when it's hot is sooo nice!) .But  before the alopecia I used my hair as a way to feel confident about myself as everyone always loved my hair and I hid behind it.Now my that my hair is coming back in I can no longer wear a wig as my hair is just too thick and is pushing the wigs up off my head. I am for some reason I have yet to understand, finding it really painful emotionally to adjust to the new short natural hair and how I feel I look.I was ok with the brush cut and pixie cut looks but now it's hit that awkward stage where it's very hard to style.I am a trade student and unfortunately I often have to switch between different types of protective head gear throughout the day and having short thick fluffy waves,I just look like a big mess. The majority of my hair grew back but there is a  patch that is shorter than the rest( My hair is about six to seven inches long and the patch is in one spot which is easily covered and is about one inch long) .The quality of the hair is soft but not the beautiful strong hair I had before the aloIpecia .I am ready to order extensions to see if being able to play with the hair will make me more comfortable in my own skin(Clip in so I can give my scalp and hair a break everyday and some days off if I am brave enough to go without or feel they are causing stress on the new growth)and stop wearing a wig everyday.I was wondering if anyone here had any advice they could share with me on this subject(Technics on placement and keeping it looking natural,I know how to care for them but have never used them with the hair loss) .I was also wondering if anyone here had any advice on how to explain the condition to a hairdresser. It seems where I live people with hair loss issues hide it as the salons here have no idea what I am talking about and make very rude, and just downright cruel remarks about my hair.I was told by the last salon I went  to looking for a good stylist that I was just obviously not taking care of my hair and was making excuses for mistakes I made using harsh products on my hair(which was all natural at the time!).Thanks ahead for any and all thoughts and advice.

Hi

Wonderful news that your hair has come back!

I'm sorry I don't have a lot of information around extensions...but the little I do know is not overly positive.  I was talking to my hairdresser the other day and she told me her daughter had put extension in her hair....it really caused damage.

I do know there are different ways to attach them, but I think the challenge would be to attach them in a way where you could remove them when you wanted (without the cost of going to a specialist shop). Also, using an attachment method that did not damage your hair but looked natural.

Sorry I haven't got a lot of information on this, but I wish you well and hope you find an alternative that works well for you.

I did a post on this on my blog not too long ago, but I did microbeads. They were difficult to hide since my bio hair is SO thin. For me, I had to place my first set about two inches in from my face in order to have enough hair to hide them. I don't think they caused any additional loss - they are "safer" than the glue-in kind.

The one thing I ran into is that while I could add a bit of density on the bottom with them, obviously, they don't help the crown. So I definitely still had to work my concealers there.

And when I accidentally ran a brush though them - ouch!! I think clip-in is a good option to get a feel for them, though, and see if they are a workable solution for you.
