I want to dye my hair a lighter color to help hide the bald spots (ha!) and decided to go to the local beauty school to do it. My mom was a hairdresser and said that even though they read about alopecia, most of the time they have no clue what it looks like.
When I called I said the same thing I always do "I have alopecia. Is that going to be a problem?" You could hear in her voice that she was excited, and she said "Not for us! As long as you don't mind the students asking you a million questions, it will be fun!"
I hope they do ask a lot of questions, and I hope they all come over and poke my head and feel the bald spots and (what might be) new hair coming in. I hope that it helps them understand that we aren't contagious and helps prepare them in case they have a customer walk in who has alopecia.
Of course, I may feel different tomorrow. lol
