Hi everyone,

I'm going on a trip soon. We will be hiking in Utah, Colorado and Yellowstone.  I don't plan on wearing a wig while hiking (too hot) and want advice on what others wear during outside activities.  I like wearing Nammu swim hats at the pool but not sure about wearing them hiking.  Any advice?

Thanks,

Dorothy G

Hi Dorothy,

I can't stand wearing wigs in the heat either, especially on hikes. Last summer before I went up to the mountains I had the same dilemma as you and ended up finding a really comfortable head covering called a pre-tied bandana head scarf. It's basically a head scarf that is pre-tied with an elastic in the back so all you gotta do is slip it on. They are really pretty and come in many different styles and colors - just make sure to get a cotton one since it allows your head to breath in the heat. I got mine from www.myheadcoverings.com and I really love it, I think you'll love it too!

Good Luck!

I am a big fan of wide brimmed sun hats, perhaps with a chin strap for active use, but my current favorite running and hiking hat is like this one: http://www.rei.com/product/721671/outdoor-research-sun-runner-cap

I like that it stays on, protects my neck from sun, and is fairly cool. While someone standing face to face could probably notice my side hairline and note that I am bald, the hat does a good job of not announcing the fact. While it can be worn without the neck cover, it wouldn't provide enough coverage for me that way.

I also have a similar hat to try out that has built in bug protection.

If I wasn't trying so hard to hide from the sun, I might wear a UV Buff, which could be easily rinsed in water and help keep me cool.

Hi GardenJess,

I have been looking at the Outdoor Research Hats at REI but they didn't have my size after their big Memorial Day sale.

Thanks!

Hi

I was talking yesterday to one of the ladies I've helped with Freedom.  She told me about the Wallaroo Hats in Australia, they are SPF 50 and keep you comfortable and cool.  I'll pop there website here for you to have a look.

Have fun hiking.
