I am pretty new to this site, I developed AA about 2 months ago, first time in my life. I have lost about 60% of my hair, I don't think my hair its falling out more than normal now (I just have so little left), and the hair on the rest of my body it is growing very slowly. I haven't shaved my legs or underarms in 2 months and I have very tiny amounts of stubble. Also my brows are getting pretty sparse but i do see tiny tiny growths.

I was lucky to find a wig that I feel comfortable in and like alot. I have gotten ALOT of compliments about my "new haircut" from people that don't know about the hair loss, so I think its pretty realistic. So this has helped my mental state while took a huge blow when my AA started.

I finally got to the dermatologist. She says that I have to wait at least 1-2 months before I can think of hair growing back (because of a 3 months growth cycle) but that active hair loss looks to have stopped.

She gave me a topical treatment and told me to up my biotin, and also prescribed a 3 week prednisone schedule. That one I haven't decided if I will take, I have been reading alot about the side effects and I really don't know if its worth it. Maybe because it is only 3 weeks I won't suffer much of the effects, but I just don't know if I want to take the chance.

Anyone tried similar treatments or have any words of advise?

I had tried a type of prednisone. Didn't work and got me sick. You can try if you want lovely, but there is no real treatment to Alopecia in general.

love <3

As I am sure you are finding out, it is a tough condition to treat. I don't think you will feel too much of the side effects with only 3 weeks of the pred. It might be worth trying to see if you can blunt your immune system enough to halt and possibly reverse your hair loss. If you try it and it doesn't work, I would not try it again. I really am hoping that they will be able to get some additional drugs developed for this condition over the next 5-10 years. They are finally getting some traction, but it is a slow process.

Hang in there, it is not fun...but you are not alone.

I am glad to hear about your wig! I finally had to force myself to order a wig after years of never having to worry about wearing one. I should be receiving it Saturday and I hope I can enjoy it just as much as you are. My dermatologist did the same thing for me. I received the painful injections, topical cream, and she put me on a three week prednisone schedule. The prednisone fortunately didn't cause me to retain water like they said - however some people react differently.(Plus it's only three weeks). It gave me severe acne on my back, chest, and all the way up my neck which was just another pain in the butt for me. They say sometimes it's just best to not do anything and quit drawing attention to it, it's essentially better for you anyways so you aren't pumping yourself with a bunch of stuff you're unaware the outcome. I now am taking plaquenel because I have heard it's helped some people in cases like mine. My hair does seem to be growing back in a bunch of spots, however the rest of the hair i've managed to save has finally begun to fall out. It's devastating but all we can do is just have hope, considering at this point it is completely out of our control. Hope this helped!
