For those who don't know, the paleo autoimmune protocol is a special diet that helps with autoimmune diseases. I was wondering has anyone here with AT or AU tried this and had any success? Was it hard?

Hi, DJ88,
I have another type of alopecia called frontal fibrosing alopecia (mostly only the forehead and eyebrows are effected which results in a receding hairline), and I just started the autoimmune protocol (AIP) 5 days ago. I have read so much on the internet and in books about it and I am very positive to give this a try because it will get to the root of the problem (leaky gut which seems to be the cause of all autoimmune diseases) and not just trying to fight the symptoms.
My doctor wanted me to start on a drug called Cyclosporine A, an immune suppressor. But it's very unhealthy for your kidneys and liver and the rest of your body, so I don't want to try that. My hair problems are also not so bad yet; I can hide it very well with my bangs and have my eyebrows tattooed.
Sabine
How are you doing now? Has the AIP protocol helped? I also have FFA, just recently diagnosed, and found out my insurance will not cover any treatment, so I wanted to try natural methods. Joan
Hi, Sabine
Yes, I'm also curious if you've stuck with AIP all this time and what you've observed. I'd been thinking along the same lines of following a functional medicine approach to determining the root cause of my autoimmunity (FFA). I thought "leaky gut" was nonsense until my test results came back positive for intestinal yeast overgrowth and high IgA numbers for gluten, which means my immune system is reacting to gluten. I've just started following a gluten-free, therapeutic paleo diet (personally, I'm interested in the Wahl's Protocol because of her own success with MS and because of its strong emphasis on vegetables), as well as an anti-candida diet in the beginning to help fix the gut microbiome imbalance. Supposedly, fixing my gut through these dietary changes will have an effect on autoimmunity.
I'm hopeful that this approach will help (because I won't be able to hide the FFA if this continues much longer), but it'll take a long time to tell. Unfortunately, it seems much more difficult to notice the effect of diet on FFA than on autoimmune disorders where the symptoms are more obvious...pain, nerve/muscle problems, digestive problems, fatigue, etc. So if you've stuck with it and you've had success, please let us know!
Cheers,
J
Ji Julie,
I almost never visit this site anymore, so I haven't read things here for more than 2 years I believe. But I stopped that diet pretty soon, I think after about only 6-8 weeks. I found it very hard to follow and since my FFA was and stil is in remission or asleep I could not notice anything different or better. Since I stopped worrying so much about my FFA and stopped reading everything on the internet and internetfora almost every day I feel so much better.
This is ofcourse easy to say for me, because it has noy prgressed since I found out about FFA in 2014, I can still hide it pretty well in normal circumstances (no swimming and no hard wind;)
I still follow no diet, and take no medicine, just hoping it stays like this and never starts again.
Wish you all the best with the diet, hopefully it works for you!!
Thanks for following up. You're right, I need to stop reading and find more ways to reduce stress, which I also think has triggered my flareups (I have had 2 or 3 flareups since this started, probably in 2011). Chances are, until this is much better understood, there is nothing that we can do about FFA, no matter how hard we search for answers!
Take care!
Hey DJ88, I've been on the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol for about a month. I also incorporated daily juicing about two weeks ago. Since I started the juicing I've noticed white-hair growth on my face. No regrowth on my head or the rest of my body but definitely some facial hair. I really believe that significantly changing ones lifestyle via diet can bring about regrowth. I'll probably start a blog and/or post what I'm doing, soon.
Also, I went from AA to AT and then to AU fairly quickly. I still have some hair on my arms and legs but very little.
If anyone has given this approach a shot and would care to share their experience, please do!
You know I'm starting to agree, bc my alopecia started when my life was going to shit. Living in a hotel, no job, kicked out of school...just stress on top of stress and then I have anxiety..
so I think, changing my lifestyle, being more active and eating right and maybe using essential oils will help me
Yes I want to know that too
I've been looking around for people that had success with AIP, too.
The most well known person is Stella https://wholeearthlife.wordpress.com/category/alopecia-areata-2/. She has Crohn's disease as well, so I'm not sure what difference it makes for those without it.
There was one user on here that experienced some regrowth.
I read of another person's experience elsewhere that had full scalp regrowth after cutting out gluten/dairy. It took him over a year to truly see results.
So the few individuals I've seen experience success from this diet just lost hair from their head. I was wondering whether AA/AT/AU makes any difference? but Paleo Mom states that, "I’ll also throw out the caveat that, while I believe that all autoimmune diseases can be improved with this protocol, there is the possibility that some diseases operate through mechanisms independent of diet." She also suggests to be patient - it could take even up to THREE years! http://www.thepaleomom.com/how-long-is-this-going-to-take-finding/
The diet isn't the only important part. There's sleep, exercise, managing stress, etc. I would also love to know others that have stuck to this and managed to put alopecia into remission.
