Try Dr Daly in Garden City. He is a dermatologist and renowned for his alopecia research. Even without insurance a consult is only $185 and he does accept some insurances (just not mine, Blue Cross)

$800/ consultation? WOW, thats alot. $185/ consultation is already alot to me but then I'm not from the US, so I do not know the average prices. I think you and your friend should list down all the pros and cons especially on financial terms. There are nearly 100 reasons that may cause hair loss besides Alopecia Areata...so it would be good to have an expert to rule out all other "easily curable" or "treatable" hair loss condition. Dr. Daly is great...if I still lived in NY, Ide still be going to him. Tell your friend don't get roped in...some people like to take advantage of the desperate. I would never spend that much unless I had a written guarantee of growth...might as well spend 800 on a wig.

I am seeing a dermatologist who's on the NAAF board, at NYU, Jean-Claude Bystryn, 212-889-3846. He accepts United, I'm not sure what else. Good luck to your friend, she's not alone, although I know she feels alone, like I think we all do when this strikes.
