I've just purchased my 1st wig & wanted to know how to care for it. The company I purchased it from has given me some info but wanted to hear from AW how you care for yours.
Which shampoo/conditioner do you use?
Which comb do you use?
How do you dry it...on a styrofoam head?
How often do you wash it?

I just have questions like this as I'm clueless & want to care for it properly.

Rule #1 - always use cold water (and always keep your wig away from extreme heat such as ovens, stoves, etc.). Use a mild shampoo and conditioner. A wig stand is best for drying because air can get in and dry it from underneath. A shower head works well, too. Good luck!
Thank you for the information, much appreciated. What type of comb/brush do you use for a human hair wig? Is the a recommended shampoo/conditioner?
Caring for a human hair wig depends on the type of wig you have. My vacuum wigs are worn in the shower and shampooed using regular shampoo. I use a wide tooth comb to comb through the shampoo. I use a conditioner that is recommended after people dye their hair (it is heavier than regular conditioner) and again combed through. After rinsing, I place it on a head form and lay a towel over it. I dry the interior first then use styling products as it is blown dry on my head. It is then placed back on the form to throughly dry before I wear it out. This method has been used for years with excellent results. I wash and style this type of wig every 3 to 4 weeks but wash the interior (using a baby wipe) after wearing it. I have one that is 6 years old and still in good condition. The interior is what has decayed now but the hair is still looking good without any bald spots.

For the human hair wigs that are just wigs, I wash every month or 6 weeks since I do not wear them as often. I fill a sink with water and shampoo, and place the wig in the water and get it throughly wet. I leave it for about 20 - 30 minutes then lift it out and rinse followed by spraying it with a solution of conditioner (any type in the house) and distilled water. Then it is placed on a towel and the towel is rolled (like a sausage) to get out excess water. While wet I place it on my head and style/blow dry using products/straight iron etc ... Finally it is place on a head form and allowed to dry throughly.

Unfortunately I have no experience with lace wigs ( the type that is glued or taped to our head). Hope this was helpful. Do not be afraid just do it but remember the only thing you cannot do is scrunch it up as you shampoo/condition it. Believe it or not, I have even dyed my human hair wigs using boxed dye when they have oxidized from the sun (changed color).
Meg,

Thank you for the information, with this being my 1st wig & being pretty expensive I want to make sure I don't ruin it off the bat...lol
